Garden design advice please?
High summer on the deck

I was asked to design a small garden, mostly influenced by zen gardens. The site is shaped like a triangle, and there's bamboo on one of the corners. However, the owners don't want sand or gravel because they have dogs, and the site doesn't seem to be apt for a zen garden (there's a Mexican fountain and a cross), so I thought about using some big rocks, tall ferns (similar to lady ferns), santolina and salvia. Santolina mostly to resemble the color of gravel, and salvia because I like the scent and the purple flowers somewhat resemble Japanese cherry blossoms. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks for the advice.

How about a small waterfall? Just the kind that bubbles over into a small pond. I would say add some Koi, but dogs+fish=bloody mess.
I think it would be really cool to add a few Tea plants. Set them off in a little corner, encircled by rocks. How cool to have access to your own tea!
Maybe some japanese-style solar lights: http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i64/Le ap2live/bghghgh.jpg

Get some rocks which have Japanese symbols ingraved, or jade colored rocks.

Any great backyard flower garden layouts?
honor guard

My first backyard (long rectangular shape with trees in corners) and I really want to design a great flower garden layout.

Anyone know of any websites with great garden layouts? I want neat ideas.

Thanks!

Well a pathway down the middle is a great idea. Putting some retaining walls along the side and planting them with perennials can make for a beautiful landscape with less maintenance. A Trellis or a seating area in the middle can be a great way to make use of this narrow area and can be used for entertainment.

I have helped people with similar shaped areas and I designed in a fire pit in the middle. Or if you have an unused area possible put a grilling area or a fire pit. So much can be done with little spaces. My website has some real good ideas for design and maintenance.

need advice on backyard structures and accessories??
car wash

i would like to have a pergola (A garden structure with an open wooden-framed roof) but unable to decide on the shape/material and design!
whether(contemporary/mediterranean/traditional...etc).
the house is semi mediterranean semi contemporary. covered with stone and marble (neutral earthy desert colors. ) the house has visible angularity (two connected boxes by their corners). the garden floor is also covered with hard redish marble/sement and its full of plants (palms, evergreens cactus tropical...etc)

any suggestions??

oh...the structure will be free standing on an rectangular area of about 18 square meters (3*6)meters.

thanks

Well first you must use Cedar or a similar wood that does not rot in the weather. I have always loved cedar since it ages really well. The bigest thing about the pergola is that you don't have a lot of design options for shape, but the little details are the trick.

You can either make it square or a pentagon or hexagon shape. With square your roof would be flat, with the others you can have a more pitched roof to the members. I know it is open framing, but sometimes if you grow ivy in the flat roof it takes over and crowds the walk space. Of course with the pitched members you don't feel so crowded.

Also the ends of the members you can cut to some scalloped design and that is a shape you can define yourself or use a standard shape. Maybe you brand the members with your last initial, or an old style Japanese blessing.

triangle shaped gardens?

we have a garden that is a right angled triangle in shape...due to us being on a corner plot. I would like to do a complete garden makeover but am having difficulty in finding a design that is this shape. Can anyone give me some help please?

i have the exact same problem. what i did myself is put a garage up with a carport on the front of it which now has ivy growing all over it and looks superb. the rest of the garden was slabbed off completely with 1 metre of raised beds made from sand stone left all the way around the edges of my garden which now have ever green plants in so that it looks good all year round. at the back of my garden behind the garage i decked the whole space which is the worst of the triangle the size is about 7x7x8 metres and this is raised by 10 inch's from the slabs. hope this gives yo some idea with the dreaded corner plots.

do you know about childrens art development? is my grandchild a genius or just plain ordinary?

My grand-daughter has designed her own Cristmas card, and drawn a house, placing the four windows at each corner of the square house she has drawn. No roof, just a chimney placed at one (top) corner of the square, and no garden. Is she just repressed?

Yea, if she's like six, then she was just having fun drawing a picture, but if she was under two, I would find someone that knows.

And probably grab a table and order a round of drinks. But the question is, why are they hanging out together in the first place?  It turns out they have more in common than you might think.

In their August issue, Psychology Today reports on the exotic field of neuroaesthetics, which is seeking to determine why we respond to art the way that we do.  According to the article, art makes use of certain visual tricks that engage our brains in a variety of specific ways.  So what we describe vaguely as beauty or creativity can in part be explained by how our brains process visual information.

The article shares 10 perceptual principles of great art, but I’ll just touch on a few.

The Peak Shift Effect occurs because our brain responds more eagerly to exaggerations and distortions than to real world people and objects. Why? Because this helps us recognize things, thereby hyper-stimulating our senses.  A Picasso that exaggerates distinctive elements is attractive to us in part because it makes it

CrazyAuntPurl: Turning a corner

Knitter, but I do feel confident to knit just about anything even if I do complain about the lack of real words in some patterns.

I've made scarves and hats and mittens and socks and bags and more scarves and hats and I think that recently, when I dug into entrelac, something just clicked. I didn't care if I did it wrong, I just wanted to it (for lifelong perfectionists such as myself, this is a sea change.) There's a big misconception that perfectionism makes you an overachiever but it can have the inverse opposite effect, paralyzing you and keeping you mired in inertia. It's such a relief to let go and just be willing to mess up and learn as you go.

I'm still a little intimidated by big huge charts but I don't feel like I do it. That's a change, too. I really like making sweaters, maybe I'll make one for myself. First maybe I'll make one for my dad, for my mom, for their dog... sweaters are completely addictive! Socks were OK, everyone said once you got into sock knitting it would grip you like caffeine-laced crack but it didn't really take with me. I did LOVE knitting all these baby booties to match my sweaters, though. All booties. Booty!
