Where are some good sites on the internet to help me design my flower garden?
An ocean of green

I'm realizing that I'm not very good at designing our flower garden and I thought maybe I could get some help online. I'm working with annual flowers right now. I did a search and found a couple of sites, but I'm looking for something simple - maybe with pictures and simple information. Any helpful sites would be appreciated. Thanks.

I personally think the best rules in design are as few as possible. Just plant and have fun! That being said they teach us master gardeners a few basic rules:

1-Keep it simple.
2-Plan for low maintenance.
3-Work from an overall plan (I often violate this)
4-Call Miss Dig (A free service in Michigan - it's to locate buried power lines.)
5-Don't make beds too narrow.
6-Don't plant trees too close to the house or other plants.
7- Make sure you get plants which do well in your climate and region.

With that in mind, here's some sites:

What's the best way to start planting a flower garden?
Pink Chiffon

I just bought my first house, and I have no idea where to begin in planting and designing a flower garden. If it helps I live in Virginia where it's a little warmer.

i found i come up with better ideas AFTER i finish a project. so start in the back of the house, by the time you get to the front, you'll be experienced and know what you like and don't like. choose low maintenance plants that come back every year (perennials or bulbs). choose durable materials like stone or brick, even treated wood will rot eventually and you'll be doing it all over again.

An architect designs a rectangular flower garden such that the width is exactly two-third of the length.?
Spring Forget-Me-Nots (Painting)

If 260 feet of antique picket fencing are to be used, find the dimensions of the garden.

Sounds like homework?
You know the perimeter of the garden is 260 feet - you also know that if the length is X, the width is 2X/3.
Well 2X + 2(2X/3) = 260
2X + 4X/3 = 260 (multiply all factors by 3 to get rid of the fraction)
6X + 4X = 780 (add the left side together)
10X = 780 (divide both sides by 10)
X = 78
The length is 78 and the width is 2/3*78 or 52.
Proof: 78 + 78 + 52 + 52 = 260 (the length of the fence)

Any great backyard flower garden layouts?
Abstract Spring Flowers Card

My first backyard (long rectangular shape with trees in corners) and I really want to design a great flower garden layout.

Anyone know of any websites with great garden layouts? I want neat ideas.

Thanks!

Well a pathway down the middle is a great idea. Putting some retaining walls along the side and planting them with perennials can make for a beautiful landscape with less maintenance. A Trellis or a seating area in the middle can be a great way to make use of this narrow area and can be used for entertainment.

I have helped people with similar shaped areas and I designed in a fire pit in the middle. Or if you have an unused area possible put a grilling area or a fire pit. So much can be done with little spaces. My website has some real good ideas for design and maintenance.

Flower garden stencils?
pink flowers in spring time

How do you make flowers form designs and words in the ground? I have seen this and would like to make one with initials in front of a restaurant, in the garden but have no idea where to start. Would you use stencils on the ground?

Method 1:
If you want really nicely shaped letters, just print them and cut them out, then position them and use marker paint, or flour around the edges, lift off the stencil and plant inside the lines. They're going to have to be pretty big becasue the flowers will spill over the side and blur the lines.

In Corel Draw you can "tile" a big design, when printing so it prints on lots of sheets, they you would tape the tiled pages together and cut it out.

Method 2:

Section the ground into squares by laying down square wire with a large (six inch) mesh.

In Corel Draw, impose a grid over your graphic, number the left side in letters and the top in numbers, then copy square by square to the corresponding squares on the ground using flour or marking paint.

After delivering a few morning orders last week we decided to drop by Golden Gate Park’s Rose Garden to see what was blooming. Strategically nestled between bustling Fulton Street and JFK Drive this low lying garden is protected from the harsh, cool afternoon winds that roll in from the Pacific Ocean, just a few miles away. It was landscaped to maximize sun exposure and minimize wind-chill, making it a safe haven and testing ground for some of the city’s most stunning and aromatic species. The Rose Garden is AARS-accredited (All-America Rose Selections), so it’s not only a fun place just to look and sniff, but great for seeing plants that will grow well in our climate. The AARS website is also an excellent resource for some fun rose history, symbolism, and care instructions.

The roses most of us see in parks and neighborhood gardens are quite different than the sorry-I-screwed-up long-stemmed reds you see at the drugstore sold with a sprig of baby’s breath. Many of these “supermarket roses” have been bred to be thorn-less and have tightly closed buds that never open to full bloom. And sin of all sins, they often don’t smell like roses. A flower that for centuries has been venerated for its intoxicating scent has been stripped of its signature attribute. Adding injury to insult, the majority of these roses are grown in Ecuador where laborers, many underage, work in unsafe conditions plying the picture perfect petals with harmful chemicals and preservatives in order to bring them to American markets. The good news is that fair-trade rose farms are on the rise and beautiful roses can also be purchased from local farmer’s markets and growers.
