I'm eager to design a water garden in my backyard and prospecting space for it.
Water gardens can be built to contain waterfalls, ponds and fountains, all of which can be enhanced by colored rock combinations, lighting, plants, and fish. The most important features of water garden design are the spot for your garden and its size with respect to your property.
Since plants and fish both need sunlight, a place in direct light away from trees and bushes works best.
Aquatic plants can greatly enhance the look of your water garden. These can be free floating, submerged, or marginal... Some plants are good for their scent, some provide more oxygen than others, and some are simply beautiful to have in the garden ecosystem.

You might try to pick up a copy of "Ponds USA and Water Gardens" at your local Home Depot or Lowe's or your local pet store. They have tones of ideas on how to build a pond. Many of the advertisers have web addresses and will send your free catalogs or have down loadable plans.. I haven't seen any software for plans but again you might try the builder supply stores. They usually have small DIY book sections for building all sorts of great ideas. Try the local fish stores that sell quality Koi and you might find just what you need.
Good luck! I would love to see pictures when your done! I want to build my own some time soon.. just haven't had the $$ to start what I want! lol
Here's a few places that look like a great places to start!

Def koi or gold fish. I would make the pond surround as simple as possible maybe with asian or modern asthetic.
plants for cover, big river rocks! yummmmm gorgeous.
I still want to attract wildlife but don't want the danger for my grandchildren so need some ideas for materials/a few plants & the design please.
I have some ideas, but I have to go to work at this moment. I will re-post as soon as I get home.
One thing that comes to mind is Monkey Grass around the border.
:-)
I have been digging a hole in my yard for a water garden that I am going to construct, but the soil is rock hard and in-organic and because of the hole's location in between two huge trees there are thousands of roots from small grass roots to huge 6" thick or bigger roots from the trees. I've been using a hoe to loosen the dirt for shoveling and to cut the roots, but it's becoming an extreme physically enduring project. Are there any other low-budget methods to get a hole dug? Remember, I need to dig a hole to match my measurements and designs for a water garden, not just a big hole.
Note: A water garden, in my case, is a small man-made pond with fish, aquatic plants, frogs, etc.
Either rent , or have some one come in with a machine called a
Bobcat .Its a very small bucket loader , that will do the job in minutes ..I use one all the time in my line of work ( landscape design )

Bulkhead fitting for pond liner? Please help!!!
Hi all, this is my first thread. I attached two pics of bulkead fitting for pond liner. Pleas let me which one is safest for pond liner since I'm going to punch a hole through the liner and of course I don't want any leakage or tearing later on, please help. Also, what type of pvc should I hook up to the bulkhead, rigid or flexible?? any support at back of liner? Thanks in advance. Dave, thanks alot, I already changed the user profile. Anyway, I just bought a house and there is a koi pond in the backyard, approximate 1,400-1,600 gal. After doing some research, I know this pond was not in a good design at all, no bottom drain. The external pump is way above the water level and the previous owner just dump the 2'' pipe straight down from the pump to the bottom of the liner pond. Not to harm the pump that works against the gravity flow, I'm going to punch a hole through the liner about midway down and install the bulkhead fitting. At the front of the bulkhead (the wet side), I'm gonna hook...
