How to lay a patio and design a garden.
We have a sunken hole we want to turn into a 'garden' of some kind. ...the land is very high at the rear of our house so its basically just a big hole in the ground with scrubby grass sides! NOT very pretty - we work from home so expect to have lots of visitors this summer - here are photos - http://myauctionpix.com/membertemplate.p hp?a_id=1321&bg_id=25....it has to stay gravelled as its also drainage for the whole garden/paddock that slopes into it (thats the concrete well on the right ) - under the gravel is drainage pipes - I'd love a paved area for a gazebo & maybe some kind of water feature - maybe also an american style stone BBQ table with seating area etc - we have a TON of stone as you can see so we can build walls and all sorts for nothing - if you have any ideas i would be grateful as i have NO idea what to do with this area? ( btw - the patio will have wooden rails in a few days so that wil be more 'finished' too....thankyou so much - i really need some inspiration !
I would put a retaining wall across the back arch of the gravel area. you can build a shorter wall in front of that to make into planting areas. You can also include the water feature in the center of the retaining wall, maybe just a small feature as you dont have tons of space back there. A greek head on the wall with water coming from it to a small pool down below which can be recycled. A nice flowering tree at each end of the wall to help with retention, beds below the trees. Planters on the gravel surface which can actually be very nice if you keep going smaller and smaller with the stone. You can put a medallion or such in the middle of the gravel area. To the left or the right could be for grilling and the seating area would be centered over the medallion area. I would plant colorful plants for full summer color and allow some to grow over the edge softening the stone. Planters up on the patio and maybe window boxes also. Good Luck
i am completing my entry for the 2009 BALI a wards and am trying to write a description for our entry but am struggling a little.
the project was carried out in the garden of a townhouse property and comprises of a raised patio area with raised, rendered planters around the raised patio with integrated seating. The rest of the garden is laid to lawn and aggregate areas with an unusual stepping stone pathway and lots of suitable planting.
does anyone have any useful input or excellent garden decsription skills or give me a clu how to make my description stand out from the bog standard.
if i had apicture that would be 100x easier than traying to explain but if anyone if good with words please have a go at helping me out!!
thanks :)
As a columnist I can at least give you some tips:
Start with an evocative statement for the first line that gets their attention, so be provocative!.
.
Next, give the reader a big picture description of what you tried to do with the design in concept..
Provide no more than five details about the best points of the garden such as those you mention in your question, but make them colorful, literally.
Summarize with how it's changed the way the owner lives outdoors.
Then close with an emotional wrap up that somehow relates to that first attention getting statement.
We want to create a mediteranean style garden and patio. We have a large low walled Patio area in buff/sandstone colour slabs. Garden rather boring at the moment !
Need some inspirational ideas please on design and colours ?
We have a
A large square lawn with Shrub borders either side. A largish pond at the end of the garden and beyond that a greenhouse and shed
We want to put a path way in perhaps stepping stones leading from patio to Greenhouse/shed at end of garden.
Perhaps incorporate an Archway somewhere on the lawn
but no sure any ideas ? to break up large boring lawn.
We have blue mosaic Patio Furniture. My hubby has built a nice Med style BBQ.
What Colour Pots/containers for Patio Plants should we get ?
Should we keep to same colour blue as Furniture or use different colours of blues/turquoises or ???
Any other suggestions ?
I'd use whites alot, as this is a frequent building colour in the mediterranean - where it adds a touch of cool and calm. Otherwise brilliant blues, as you suggest, are great.
Many countries have decorative bright tiles, so if you add these, this will enhance the overall impact.
Add terracotta pots, for urns and general potting.
For flowers and plants, consider the Mediterranean Fan Palm - Chamearops humilis. This is hardy in areas as far north as the UK, once more than a couple of years old. Try some succulents too, such as Aloe Striatula - this grows well in my central England garden. Also, some of the Century plants are great, and will live if given a sheltered position, Agave americana: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Agave _americana4.jpg These grow around the med area too, frequently seen on cliffs etc.
Add in some bright coloured flowers too, though the bouganvilleas seen around the med are not that hardy, but can be sheltered during winter. Oleanders are frequently found, with whites, pinks and reds being common around the med: http://www.floridata.com/ref/N/nerium.cf m
If you can afford an Olive tree, even better, as this will add a really interesting touch (the larger ones can be pricey). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive Otherwise, a grape vine would be great, allowing you to admire the bunches of grapes hanging from its vines - it could be grown over an arch, or pergola.
I'd also add some mediterranean herbs, such as Origanum, which also add a ton of flowers when blooming, for extra interest.
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob
Hi
I wish to build a circular brick patio about t to 3 metres in diameter in my garden for placing garden chairs tables on.
The design would use concentric rings of sets or bricks each of which would be approx 75-100cm square.
Any idea where to find this in a plan form?
Thanks
TJ

Growing Climbing Roses for the Garden or Patio: These Flowering ...
Climbing and rambling roses are among the most popular flowering plants and rightly deserve a place in almost any garden design. They are often planted to scramble over a garden trellis or pergola, but the smallest varieties may only reach 3 or 4 feet, making them suitable for the smallest garden or patio, while the most vigorous, growing to 30 feet and more, will cover a high wall or scramble to the top of a good sized tree.
Different varieties may produce double, semi double or single flowers from one to four inches across in a wonderful range of pinks, lavenders, whites, reds, yellows, oranges, many of which are fragrant. One or two even bear blue flowers.
Types of Climbing RosesTrue climbing roses have a branching habit producing a framework of old wood, with flowers appearing on the new side growth. They generally need to be tied in to a support, but some use their hooked thorns to support themselves as they scramble through another bush or tree.
Ramblers have large clusters of flowers on long flexible stems, and throw up new stems from ground level each year. They also need to be tied in, but their flexible stems are particularly good for training on pillars or pergolas.
