What kind of rocks do you need for a rock garden? What patterns should you make? How do you make a model of it
30079289

I need the answer ASAP. Im planning to design one and make a model.

I want to be really respectful here; but what might be the critical need in asap?

Why a Model?

Certainly there is more than one suggestion. ROCKS local to you; Rocks collected from various travels; Very unique; very large; etc.

I did a job for a woman in WA who had her entire ROCK garden lined with sea glass as "mulch"

Pattern is a personal choice. Natural might be one way; some sort of trail equating to places and times when/where you found them; Hearts; Butterflys;;; anything.

No offense but is this for a Horticultural design class?

Garden design advice please?
abstract arch

I was asked to design a small garden, mostly influenced by zen gardens. The site is shaped like a triangle, and there's bamboo on one of the corners. However, the owners don't want sand or gravel because they have dogs, and the site doesn't seem to be apt for a zen garden (there's a Mexican fountain and a cross), so I thought about using some big rocks, tall ferns (similar to lady ferns), santolina and salvia. Santolina mostly to resemble the color of gravel, and salvia because I like the scent and the purple flowers somewhat resemble Japanese cherry blossoms. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks for the advice.

How about a small waterfall? Just the kind that bubbles over into a small pond. I would say add some Koi, but dogs+fish=bloody mess.
I think it would be really cool to add a few Tea plants. Set them off in a little corner, encircled by rocks. How cool to have access to your own tea!

Get some rocks which have Japanese symbols ingraved, or jade colored rocks.

How can I keep grass from growing up through my gravel (with sand base) rock garden without using poisons?
30079292

My plan was to design a maintenance free patio, but now I'm constantly having to pull hundreds of little grass shoots up from my patio and it's anything but maintenance free! Please help!

You can make a poison-free, earth friendly herbicide using salt, vinegar and soap. You'll find different variations of the recipe, like here http://www.therenewableplanet.com/blogs/ the_daily_green/archive/2007/05/24/make- your-own-eco-friendly-hebicide.aspx

Plants for a rock garden?
30079289

I live in the west of scotland and would welcome any ideas and/or websites for design.

Oh my goodness, there are LOADS of plants you can get for a rock garden!!

Its not really the time of year at the moment as a lot are finishing flowering, but go to your local nursery, market or garden centre and head for the alpine section. Dont be ripped off though. For a small alpine you should only pay about £1.00. I recently did my front garden with alpines and this year they have come up a treat.

Choose plants like saxifraga, aubrieta, phlox & frigillanas Herbs and lavender also do really well. There are loads, loads more to choose from i just cant remember all the names!! Have a look on internet to get some ideas.

Good Luck!!

Everyone could use a little more tranquility in their life, right? For homeowners with a rock garden, peace and serenity are just a few steps away.

Not only are rock gardens beautiful to look at and easy to design with the help of a landscaper, but they can save homeowners money, too, since rocks do not need any watering or long-term maintenance.

Of course, designing a rock garden with enough style and visual intrigue to stay relevant for years to come involves much more than simply placing a few rocks inside the yard.

    Decide On a Look

Every rock garden has its own style. While some homeowners favor the look of a barren, contemporary garden without much flair, others favor more classic set ups featuring water elements and low growing plants among the rock designs.

The most successful rock gardens tend to mimic nature in some way or another, which is why they shouldn’t look too perfect. Symmetrical designs tend to look too cheesy for most tastes.

    Make Your Own Rock Garden

Rock gardens are an excellent way to create a more dynamic outdoor living space. Varying elevations add dimension, which is particularly suitable for smaller areas. Stone patios with water fountains or fire pits invite gatherings and are more likely to draw you outdoors in all seasons, but rock gardens can be expensive and exhausting if not planned right. Take inspiration from monumental works, but start small with your first rock garden. Need more inspiration? Read about a  rock garden in Colorado .

    • Install stones between spring and early fall. Frost can cause ground heaving, which disrupts stone placement, and suppliers can’t cut dimensional stone effectively when the weather’s below freezing.

    • To etermine what kind of rocks you like, visit a demonstration garden.

    • Choose smaller rocks. They don’t need professional delivery and installation.

    • Use stones in their existing size and shape, creating a more natural look and eliminating cutting and processing costs.
