G'day, just moved to central Florida and am itching to get a raised veggie garden going. Any hints or tips (pests and disease avoidance) would be very appreciated :)
I just built a raised vegetable garden in Michigan and I absolutely LOVE it. My raised garden is quite large . . . 24' x 16'. I purchased treated 4 x 4's at Home Depot, stacked two high (8 inches) and secured them with stainless steel brackets and large screws. Then I used simple lattice as a fence . . . which I reinforced at the top and bottom . . . and attached inside the 4 x 4's. With my size garden . . . it took 8 yards of soil to fill it. I was wheelbarreling dirt for 2 days straight over Memorial Day weekend !!! Not fun. Where we live . . . the lattice is sufficient for keeping critters out. We've had zero damage so far (knocking on wood). But I did purchase a wire fence to go inside the lattice just in case. But so far I haven't had to. Also . . . before I put the soil in . . . I put a layer of compost for a base. Most cities in Michigan produce and give free compost away . . . which is nice. You should check with your local city to see if they offer free compost. We couldn't be happier with the garden. The veggies are going crazy !!! Have fun with it whatever you end up doing. It's a fantastic hobby.

i plan to grow vegetables with a friend at his home way down in the san joaquin valley, ca
we have 13 rows of 7 feet each in his yard...ive never done this before and so im a little ignorant but eager to learn...we've barely broke up the soil and set the rows and now am wondering what step to take next
First, definitely go with some tomatoes. Then, I'd also grow a few varieties of lettuce if you like salad. Also, broccoli and snow peas are great for gardens that size. You do have to provide support for the peas though. Its really up to you, plant what you like to eat! Cucumber plants are awesome and can be very productive, but you have to trellis them as well.
I'm looking for a garden design software - this is the one I'm going for probably - partly because it is australian based plants/climate etc I'm designing an ornamental vegetable garden. There are heaps of plants in this program but does it include a lot of different vegetables?
There are only a few vegetables on it so not worth it for your use
Im looking for vegetable gardening tips and want to build the perfect vegetable garden. I have found a really good free ebook to get me started at http://www.vegetablegardeninghelp.com but wanted to know if anyone has any design plans for a vegetable garden? Thanks
Perhaps look at sunset magazine; they always have cute ideas for your garden!
Or perhaps go to the home depot and look at the magazines they have on gardening.
They are quite helpful!
Good luck!
My son has taken an interest in planting a vegetable garden. Is there an online source with a downloadable program to design the project? I want to nurture his interest, but don't want the yard to look horrible.
Try www.GrowVeg.com - there's a free 30 day trial and it helps you draw out the garden area, then add vegetables, herbs and fruit. It automatically spaces the plants, calculates how many you require and will show when to sow, plant and harvest them for your area. There's also a feature which emails you reminders of when to sow and plant each crop.
Good luck!

Growing Carrots on Heavy Soil in the Vegetable Garden « Top Veg
It is difficult, if not impossible, to grow carrots on heavy soil in the vegetable garden. It is hard to produce a seed bed, with very small soil crumbs, suitable to enable the carrot seed to germinate. When it rains the soil goes like concrete, and then when it dries out, it cracks.
On our heavy soil we have incorporated coarse sand to make it more friable. The sand particles help to keep the clay particles apart. You need a lot of coarse sand to have any effect. You need so much that it is not really practical.
Adding a lot of organic matter does not solve the problem, because you need to add so much to have any effect.
Carrots have always been grown on sandy soils, or sandy-loams. But gardeners with heavy soil could try growing carrots in a container – which can be filled with the perfect growing medium!
Containers make it possible to grow carrots on heavy soil in the vegetable garden.
