Water Garden Design - Which Water Garden Features Enhance Pond Design?
Exotic at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

I'm eager to design a water garden in my backyard and prospecting space for it.

Water gardens can be built to contain waterfalls, ponds and fountains, all of which can be enhanced by colored rock combinations, lighting, plants, and fish. The most important features of water garden design are the spot for your garden and its size with respect to your property.

Since plants and fish both need sunlight, a place in direct light away from trees and bushes works best.

Aquatic plants can greatly enhance the look of your water garden. These can be free floating, submerged, or marginal... Some plants are good for their scent, some provide more oxygen than others, and some are simply beautiful to have in the garden ecosystem.

What is the easiest way to dig up dirt for a water garden?
Toronto mansion

I have been digging a hole in my yard for a water garden that I am going to construct, but the soil is rock hard and in-organic and because of the hole's location in between two huge trees there are thousands of roots from small grass roots to huge 6" thick or bigger roots from the trees. I've been using a hoe to loosen the dirt for shoveling and to cut the roots, but it's becoming an extreme physically enduring project. Are there any other low-budget methods to get a hole dug? Remember, I need to dig a hole to match my measurements and designs for a water garden, not just a big hole.

Note: A water garden, in my case, is a small man-made pond with fish, aquatic plants, frogs, etc.

I want to design a water garden in my open terrace .How am I to start with. please suggest me ideas.?

You should first check with your local nursery and ask if they have the supplies.

You can make a water garden in almost anything. Decide how big you want it to be and find a container (I like the really big pots you can get @ 1/2 price pots). You will need a small pump like you woul use in a fountain, a liner for the pot and whichever water plants you like or can find in the local nurseries.

Look for cool rocks or get a small fish to add for some interest.

Just realize that the direct sun can cause a lot of algea to build up so ask the nursery how to keep it controlled.

Good luck and enjoy!

Where can I get beautiful designs for my home garden water cascade?
Red and yellow rose covered by raindrops

I am planning to built a small water cascade(like a water falls) in my garden. The area I can use is six feet by three feet.

I just googled "waterfall garden plans" under google images, and there are several sites (woodworkersworkshop, etc), which give you step by step instructions, and before, during, and after pictures.

Where can I get quotes for a water garden online?
Pavillion

I've found several designs online I'm interested in but I never can seem to find a cost to go along with them.

I'lll give you a price. I put in 2. A 2x5', and a 4x8'. All the plants, stone, pumps, fish and landscaping cost me $325.00. It took me about 12 hours, over 3 days. I live in NW Ohio.

  • Planning and good design feed an urban family

“The woman over the back — she’s from an Italian family — is the only other person around here with a vegetable garden. There’s all this land in backyards going to waste, just growing lawn. The only useful trees in gardens, directly useful to people that is, is the unused lemon tree next door, an unharvested Magenta Lillypilly ( ) a couple houses down and my mandarin tree.

“One of the reasons for redesigning the garden was to make suburban living more sustainable in a food and in an environmental sense, so we do not have to buy food that is imported great distances and so we can make effective use of our kitchen and garden wastes to make compost”.

    First, the design

When Fiona set out to design the food garden she quickly discovered the site’s limiting factors. These were a nutrient-poor, sandy soil, a large Jacaranda tree at the northern end of the garden and a neighbour’s tall oleanders that cast long shadows over the garden, making up to two-thirds of the site unusable in winter.

The ideal location to place your tree is on a east facing window sill or a bright north is second best. It’s best not too place your tree on a southern or western facing window as this will cause rapid drying of the soil with the heat of the afternoon sun, so be vigilant during the summer months if you have to place your trees there.

Before you water your tree it is best to leave the water standing in a container to reach room temperature. I tend to collect rain water or use filtered water. If you have a high lime cotent in your water dont use tap water on Azalea’s.

How do you know when to water?

Scratch or rub the surface of the soil. If the soil is wet leave it. if the soil is damp you can give some slight watering or soil misting and if it is dry, well it needs watering.

    How to water?

The best method is to use a fine ‘rose spray watering can’ as you would use for watering seedlings. You can submerse your tree about once a month.
