I have a storm drain in our backyard. trying to find a way to hide it with landscaping or gardening. any ideas

the drain is on a slope and it is arround 10-12 feet long and it is a open drain installed by the county

A lot depends on who owns the land the drain runs thru. If it's yours you could plant flowers along it, or blueberry bushes, dwarf spruce ("Jean's Dilly"). There are lots of choices.

I am trying to get rid of the grass in my backyard and make a garden. Can I just put down landscape paper?

I want to cover it all with mulch I but I wasn't sure if I could put the whole works over my existing grass to kill it. i'd love to know an EASY way, my grass allergies are killing me!!

yea, you can. I did that for my children's play area. First you will need to mow it really low then put down the weed barrier and follow up by mulching heavily on top. Occasionally you will find some grass trying to creep in but all you will need to do is pluck it out. Good Luck.

Any tips for a beginner's vegetable garden?

I live in Reno, Nv (Northern Nevada). I have a landscaped backyard with a flower garden, but I want to make a small vegetable garden that will I will plan and take care of by myself.

I am planning to start it just outside the fence to my backyard. I will be buying live plants instead of seeds. It will not be attached to the drip system that my other plants use (where's the fun in that?)

I plan to research the matter online and check with the nursery for information. I just wanted to also get advice from hobby vegetable gardeners themselves.

Thank you for your time:)

Leave plenty of room between your rows or plants. Your garden may look thin at first but the pay-off will be great. Fertelize every two weeks, water every two or three days, and good luck . Oh ya,dont forget to weed!!

Do you have any ideas for landscaping for a 17 feet by 26 feet area surrounded with RR ties in our backyard?

The backyard is openly seen by neighbors all around.
The area used to be a vegetable garden.
I don't know anything about landscaping!
I don't have much money to spend!
Central Illinois climate
Don't want any water features

keep it a vegetable garden
it really doesn't take a lot of effort
you just need to water once in a while
even if you don't weed it, you will still get vegetables

you will get a lot of pride out of what gets produced in your garden

I'm talking less than 20 bucks for transplants and 5 bucks for seed

don't be afraid

Garden landscaping communities/forums and help?

Right now, my backyard is just a piece of land with brown dirt.

However, I have never done gardening and I don't know where to start.

Here's what I need to get done:
1.) I want to pave large tiles/flagstones for a patio
2.) In the back, I want to have a garden stone wall where I can plant trees (for privacy), flowers, and attach garden lights. (Example: http://landscapetour.com/db5/00432/lands capetour.com/_uimages/DSCFback1.JPG)
3.) Garden stairs leading up to the fence door, like this: http://image06.webshots.com/6/1/54/62/16 6815462ZaMGEA_ph.jpg

This is what I want to achieve, except more squared, not round.

Is there a garden landscaping forum online where I can get help from professionals and experts? I don't know where to start.

I'm also scared that weeds will grow later if I carelessly remodel without prior experience.

Thanks.

I hope these help, as for weeds they come regardless. As for ideas I think your almost there, its just confidence. join these sites and ask I am sure they will help you.

  • Anyone out there besides me that is going to kill that Orkin roach ...

TO "SHAME ON": we can still listen to it as well as it is removing louder. Do roaches revisit in pairs or armies? we can listen to them articulate in my kitchen. we am starting to take my pills as well as go to bed as well as hide. we will lapse tomorrow if they do not get me. DID we know roaches eat tellurian eyebrows? That is true, it is all protein for them.

Yes, and why must it continue to do it over and over again….once is bad enough! I guess it is doing what it was designed to do, make us take notice, but I just noticed and will remember that Orkin uses just plain annoying advertising, and that does not make me want to call them. I say we go to the store and buy something to fumigate it ourselves!! Or better yet, someone step on the thing and squash it! It will click, but only one more time ………..

I know exactly what you mean. That is one of THE most annoying damn things I’ve ever seen, or heard. I can’t shut off my speakers because I llike to listen to internet radio, and the animation is also annoying.

Backyard Oasis Disaster: Plan a moveable garden and flat rock ...

I am creating two moveable gardens. Both gardens are for the same reason: flood control and to create new looks for my yard . By changing growing containers and flowers I can give the area a new look for each season.

As we are moving into fall in my area I will make my first containers mainly a collection of autumn mums. Other ideas might be a dried tree root with vines or an old crate with a variety of potted plants.

In the front of my yard I have had a raised bed garden. It’s been practical for ease in mowing and it’s been very pretty. But with the recent front yard flooding I am setting the landscaping up in such a way to redirect any future water problems and to protect the house and the lower apartment.

For this reason, to keep moisture away from the house I am removing the plants from the raised beds and turning it into a raise flat rock patio area. This will remove any soil that can attract moisture to the house foundation. My plan is to lay in flat rock and then add potted trees, plants and garden features to the area for color. The outer corners will keep a small amount of soil but be set up to keep water away from the foundation Two shrubs will remain but small potted trees will be added to the flat rock patio for height and interest.
