flagstone entry

Im Planning On Moving Out To California in the near future. Im a landscape gardener And I Want To Find The Area Which I Would Get The Most Work In Does Anyone No?
Thanks.
"Santa Clarita area, Palmdale-Lancaster and the Riverside area"

Do these area's have a lot of crime obviosly everywhere has it but are any of these area any worse than the others.?

Lots of people are moving to the Central Valley. You could try Modesto, Fresno, Livermore, Pleasanton. Lots of people are moving into the foothills to the Sierras for vacation homes.

Pick the kind of climate that you like best!! Deserts, mountains, snow or no snow, sea shore, etc. However, I would make a trip out here first to check out the cost of living. It is probably a lot higher than you are used to. You can also check to see what landscape gardeners are making in the area you are interested in.

Good Luck!

I need to design the landscape of a small back yard. Any tips?
Orange trees and peaks

I see a lot of books on designing large gardens, but we live in California and have a very small back yard that we'd like to liven up (right now it's just mulch). Is it worth hiring a contractor? Is there good landscape design software we could use to help do it on our own?

HGTV offers an online tutorial.

If you are cramped for space. I'd plant vertically...Tall, skinny shrubs, climbing plants, hang baskets from fence, house, etc. Save all the ground space you have for you to move around in and enjoy. Potted plants offer lots of versatility. If you get tired of where they are or need that space later, just move them.

P.S. Keep the mulch away from the foundation of the house. It give bugs easier access to basements and crawlspaces.

Outside/garden wedding reception....tips?
IMG_5734

We've decided to have a small garden wedding reception at my uncle's very nicely landscaped and well maintained backyard in southern california for a maybe March/April 2009 wedding...any ideas and tips that you might have for me in regards to lighting, dance floor, weather etc. thanks a bunch

My suggestion is a MUST for all outdoor weddings... I have had two daughters to get married outside & both times this was used. Go to your local Lowes or Home Depot & buy some Cutter Bug Free Backyard Spray. The day before the wedding, using the water hose, spray the complete yard with this & you will not be bothered with mosquitoes.

  • The Creative Journey » Descanso Gardens Train Station - Plein air ...

    Plein air landscape oil painting

Late Thursday afternoons at Descanso Gardens always bring opportunities for things to paint. Yesterday I enjoyed the view of the little train station where the engine and engineer wait to take people on a magical trip through the camellia forest. Maybe one of these days I’ll actually take the train ride, camera in hand, and see the garden from a different (low angle) point of view. An alizarin crimson underpainting (done very rapidly) imparts a warm glow to the scene.

I thought I left my big roll of brushes at home and consequently painted most of this with a medium sized filbert. Some of the fine detail on the engine and engineer was done later when I had the appropriate tools. Last week’s Descanso painting has been purchased by a lovely new collector from So. Pasadena, but this one is still available.

Reminder: the photos I post are low resolution so that they load quickly for those on slow connections. If you are interested in purchasing a painting, please ask and I will send a higher quality image.

Redwood Barn Nursery: Early Autumn Flowers

Warm days, cool nights, and dry weather characterize the early fall here. Great gardening weather, a perfect time to re-seed your lawn, plant landscape shrubs and trees, divide perennials. But don't forget flowers at this time of year.

    Annuals

Nurseries and garden centers are already carrying the winter annuals, many of them in full bloom: pansies and violas, snapdragons, stock, and calendulas in six-packs and four-inch pots. These will give quick color, but may go out of bloom if there is another spell of hot weather. Don't be discouraged. Trim off the spent blossoms and seed heads, and new flower buds will emerge almost immediately. All of the afore-mentioned flowers will bloom all winter and well into next spring. One of my favorites is Chrysanthemum paludosum. This relative of the more familiar Mums has an annual white flower that resembles a miniature Shasta daisy, blooming from October through May.

    Perennials bloom year after year....
