I am in Japan for a few weeks. I used to live here so I have seen the Kyoto gardens and the usual Japanese garden stuff. However, I am now a student in landscape architecture and I would like to explore more of the contemporary/recent designs here in Japan. Does anyone know of any designed specifically by lanscape architects or land artists in the Tokyo, Saitama, or Kyushu areas?
This might sound crazy, but since no one else has tried I will. Rent The Karate Kid. Go right to the credits and see who the set designer was. Search the web and try to contact. I'll bet whoever it is has a lot of contacts here and there. That's the best wild guess I have. Sayonara
I've always been interested in gardens/landscape/flowers/ trees, etc. I want to make designing/beautifying gardens my hobby. I am just starting out and I have a lot to learn...
There are 2 parts to my question:
--What's the difference between landscape design and landscape architecture?
--Do I need to become a plant expert? For example, if I am planning a section of a garden and I want a tree that has beautiful large pink flowers, should I be expected to list the names of all trees that match this description? (i.e. the magnolia tree). Do I need to become knowledgeable of the life cycles of all different types of plants and what specifically needs to be done to take care of them (i.e. know that X plant needs a lot of sunlight and a lot of water, while Y plant grows well in clay soil, etc)?
Thanks!
Landscape architechure is a degreeand more too learn.
Landscape design is kind of just a job description. Doesn't really mean the same thing everywhere or to everybody.
You will need to have a reasonable working knowledge of the plants for your area to be any good at it. Learning about the plants is a big part of the fun of it.
Just keep reading and experimenting in your garden. Learn the plants you have and can get.
And take time to relax with the plants. They will help you learn if you watch.

I need advice!!! I am going to be a sophomore in college and currently am a chemistry major. I am thinking about changing my major to landscape architecture but I don't know if this is the right choice for me. I am not talented artistically but with a good work ethic, I can make do. I am afraid that not being artistically gifted will put me at a disadvantage with this major. What do you think? I am really really organized, love being outside and gardening which is why I think this major may be the right one.
Give it a try! Even if it doesn't work out or you don't like it, you still have plenty of time to find another major. Some schools don't even make you declare a major until you're a junior, so don't worry about switching. Besides, working hard at something you actually enjoy will be so much more rewarding for you than working hard on something you can't stand. With all the computer graphics programs now, I don't even think that you need to be artistically inclined, because the computer can draw it for you. Maybe you should talk with the head of the department and see what they think, but I'm pretty sure it won't be a big deal.

The Roman Landscape [750 BMA - 400MA]
The Romans carried out landscape design on a scale not seen again until recently. They left a strong imprint on the land. The Romans designed large urban open spaces with perforated edges. These public open spaces were designed to keep the masses entertained – a point highlighted in the movie Gladiator. They combined garden and lifestyle ideas from the Greeks, Etruscans, Persians and Egyptians. In comparison to their public environments their residential site developments were typically inward looking.

The Honor Award: MONTE CARLO
In a Buckhead neighborhood where outdated homes are most often razed to make way for new construction, the team transformed a 1980’s home and its neglected grounds into a contemporary Tuscan estate. Situated prominently at the end of a street in an exclusive Atlanta neighborhood, the three- acre site overlooks a serene, private lake and wooded backdrop. For this winning project, Land Plus worked closely with the architect, builder, and property owner to formulate a cohesive design vision for the property.
