I have landscaping rocks which circle around the garden that we have with flowers/shrubs here in Milwaukee, WI. I put Round Up on the weeds and grass inside of the garden, but now the problem is that the Round Up is killing some of the lawn next to the landscaping rocks. What should I do now since the grass is turning a bit yellow outside all around the rocks which affected the lawn that is growing next to the rocks externally?
Round up is a great product but you gotta be kind of careful when using. It is basically a topical herbicide and affects only living tissue that it comes in direct contact with. There obviously was a bit of a wind when you sprayed the grass inside your garden, and the product drifted to the outside. I would pull the yellowing grass and re-seed the area where you want grass to grow. Once Round up hits the soil, it becomes inert after a day or two so you can plant in a few days and it should be ok. good luck. To avoid this in the future, use a piece of cardboard to block any product over spray.

elaborate sprinkler system. I just want something I can do myself and something that looks nice. Or any cool ideas some of you might have to raise the property value of my property with landscaping.
The automatic sprinklers are pretty easy to install, and some can be as easy as attaching them to your standard spigot. But if you are really plumbing impaired there are electronic timers that you can install at the spigot on the outside of the home and then run the hose to a few regular sprinklers that are strategically placed in the garden area. put it out in spring and set and put away in the fall. they sell them at home depot.
(if you really want to - try a search on line for toro sprinkler systems to find components for the DYI system.)
I live in Reno, Nv (Northern Nevada). I have a landscaped backyard with a flower garden, but I want to make a small vegetable garden that will I will plan and take care of by myself.
I am planning to start it just outside the fence to my backyard. I will be buying live plants instead of seeds. It will not be attached to the drip system that my other plants use (where's the fun in that?)
I plan to research the matter online and check with the nursery for information. I just wanted to also get advice from hobby vegetable gardeners themselves.
Thank you for your time:)
Leave plenty of room between your rows or plants. Your garden may look thin at first but the pay-off will be great. Fertelize every two weeks, water every two or three days, and good luck . Oh ya,dont forget to weed!!
I live in NC and am having terrible problems with deer eating my landscaping like shrubs, flowers and garden plants. Any ideas besides blowing the critters away?
There is a product called liquid fence that is suppose to work, also cayanne pepper mixed in water and spray on shrubs, go to a beauty shop and ask for their hair clippings and spread them around, they will detect the human scent and flee. I would try the liquid fence spray first if no response the pepper spray.
My husband and I bought a house last fall. When we moved in the previous owner didn't have any flower gardens around the house, no landscaping at all for that matter. All they had we're rocks in place of where the flowers should be. I haven't done anything about it yet, but this morning I dug through the rocks and found that there is a thin black lining between the ground and the rocks. I am dying for a flower garden, but I have never grown anything before in my life! I don't know where to start....
My question is should I remove this lining in order to plant my flower garden, or do I leave it there and just put holes in it when I plant bulbs and such?
My husband thinks I should just put topsoil over the lining and poke holes, he said that will help keep the weeds out....
What should I do?
Leave it there. Your husband is right. It's a weed cloth. You'll spend a lot less time pulling weeds if you leave it and poke holes for the flowers.

Jane Austen#39;s World of English Gardens

Jane Austen (1775-1817) set her novels in the English countryside where she lived most of her life. Through these books, we are given first-hand glances at the place of gardening in the everyday life of these decades, when England was becoming a nation of gardens. It is clear from these images how much she was attracted to the landscape, to the farms and the natural beauties of the land.
Farms
Jane Austen's England was still an agricultural nation. We see no signs of the Industrial Revolution in her novels. Her characters lived in the country, where farming was the way of life. The gentry at this time was still largely regarded as the "landed gentry," and while it is not always easy to discern in the novels, a close look reveals that Austen's country estates were based on farms, and that many of her principle characters made their living through agriculture, either through farming their own lands (usually employing a steward or bailiff to manage the business) or leasing them to tenants. In many cases, the value of an estate was the value of the rents it received.
