the garden has a small lawn, with bordering bushes, how do i stop weeds etc from growing thru the loose slate. do i put plastic sheeting and sand under the slate?
Dig off all the turf and other plants that you do not want.
Put down a layer of what we called Terram which is a black plastic woven sheeting sold in different widths.
Then place your choice of topping on top of this.
Slate is expensive so use some areas where you have just bark as this looks good but needs topping up every two or three years

John shows an overhead view of his front yard garden. He discusses his design criteria and gives you some things to think about when designing ...
What I am asking for is an actualy landscape layout or design that describes which plants go where, ect.
Check around with friends and neighbors. Most perennials need to be divided fairly regularly, I'm sure they'd be more than willing to give you divisions of theirs. Same for ornamental grasses. Maybe you can collect some seeds from their gardens too.
For over a year we have asked our neighbour constantly to park his van on his own land as it laps a lot on our lawn. He has totally ignored our request. Our house is semi detached and the front area is open plan. Also its annoying as our landscaped view is hidden behind his van which is falling into bits
I have a few thoughts.
1. Get some deer urine and spray it in his van on the seats and carpet.
2. Cut his brake lines.
3. Slice his tires.
4. Place nail spikes on your property and let him flatin his own tires.
5. Place a speaker in your yard and play loud sounds: Dogs barking or something annoying.
6. Put animal poop on the drivers seat.
7. Torch the van.
8. Grease the handles on the doors of his van.
9. Place a sign in his yard - saying something like "Child Molester lives here".
This is not to say you wont get into trouble - but I am sure you would get his attention.
If he disrespected my request - Id make him wish he never lived beside me.

Paid half money up front, was told would take one to two weeks to complete. This was nearly three months ago. Chap arrives always wants to use our phone, either too wet has to go elsewhere. We are left with a garden full of mud no grass. He never clears up and leaves his tools. We are up to our eyes in
mud and no landscape. He has been abusive and rude. He has left a huge crack in the driveway with his truck and cement mixer. I am now very scared of him. We do not see him for days/weeks unless we ring him then he will come and rotavote the mud and leave. I am thinking of a small claims court or claim off his insurance for the driveway at the very least.
Take him to court,he is a cowboy,if he turns up tell him you want your money back,be firm with him, here is a little friendly advice mate NEVER EVER pay for work up front,if they want paid upfront go somewhere else, you will maybe pay a little more but any decent business do the work first then get paid, good luck.
I need some ideas for landscaping my front yard. The yard gets full sun,the soil is a poor draining clay and it gets a lot of wind. I have pics posted at http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w173/ calista77/100_1036.jpg
and http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w173/ calista77/100_0639.jpg to give you a better idea as to what I have to work with. I'm looking for plants that will grow well in my type of soil and that thrive in Nova Scotia, preferrably perennials. The blue rock in picture #1 is necessary for drainage because we live on top of a hill. I really hate the look of the blue rock but nothing can really be done with it. There is a layer of contractor grade landscaping fabric underneath the rock to prevent weeds from cropping up. If anyone has any ideas to cammoflauge the rocks I'm all ears.
Drive around and look at other homes to see what you like. Take pictures from a distance so you see the entire front of the house and also take close ups of the plants. Ask the owner's permission to take photos. Most people are flattered that you think their yard is beautiful, and I've never been denied permission. You can ask the owner for plant names and/or you can go to the nursery with the photos to identify plants that do well in your area.

Landscape amp; Garden Design | Re: Re : How Do I Rid Of Dog Poo From ...
Again I say - these are not nice people - my suggestion (again) quite seriously is that you do contact the Council in writing. You have added more info in that now we all know that the dogs are not being supervised they are just roaming free, that is contrary to regulations. I wouldn't be surprised if a dog catcher lurked and took the dogs in. Fine and all, tough! And obviously speaking to them (in your kind way) has proven fruitless. The reality is that some people just see things differently to others. You say they are nice people, they probably are regardless of their dogs doing what they do - and they know the dogs do it... I'm not sure why someone wouldn't address it if you had brought it to their attention. TBH, what I would do, under your circumstances, is go knock on your neighbours door. Say kindly, "just wanted to let you know that my silly spouse has put snail bait all over our garden area" (if they want to know more - just say EVERYWHERE), and you wanted to let...
Front Yard Landscaping – 3 Amazing Ideas | Home and Gardening
Your front yard doesn’t have to be a typical patch of grass, mailbox, and garden flag. The front yard landscaping ideas that are available for you to use are endless. With a little creative thinking and an open mind, you can have a front yard that everyone in the neighborhood will talk about.
Front Yard Landscaping Idea Number One: Create Outdoor Rooms
Many landscape rs sell the idea of creating outdoor rooms in your backyard, but it is very popular to apply this landscaping idea to the front yard. Simply assess the size of your yard and look for areas that can be landscaped as a separate little sitting space. Place a bench under a tree. Fill in the surrounding area with different types of flowers and shrubs, and add a few potted plants next to your bench. Having a sitting area in your front yard creates a wonderful place to visit with neighbors, observe the daily happenings on your street or even watch your kids while they play.
