I put Round up grass-weed killer inside of my landscape garden, but it's killing grass outside of the garden?
Sharp Landscape Gardening

I have landscaping rocks which circle around the garden that we have with flowers/shrubs here in Milwaukee, WI. I put Round Up on the weeds and grass inside of the garden, but now the problem is that the Round Up is killing some of the lawn next to the landscaping rocks. What should I do now since the grass is turning a bit yellow outside all around the rocks which affected the lawn that is growing next to the rocks externally?

Round up is a great product but you gotta be kind of careful when using. It is basically a topical herbicide and affects only living tissue that it comes in direct contact with. There obviously was a bit of a wind when you sprayed the grass inside your garden, and the product drifted to the outside. I would pull the yellowing grass and re-seed the area where you want grass to grow. Once Round up hits the soil, it becomes inert after a day or two so you can plant in a few days and it should be ok. good luck. To avoid this in the future, use a piece of cardboard to block any product over spray.

Where can I find landscaping rocks to line a garden, in Colorado?
Waterfalls

I want to line my garden with some nice, flat red rocks, sort of like what you would find on the flatirons in Boulder. However, when I go to home depot, they are $5/ piece. I'm hoping to line the garden for less than $25, any ideas?
Thanks for the suggestions, especially since yes, there are a lot of rocks in the Rocky Mountains? Any park names or areas by the side of the road where I can go exploring? Thank you all for the ideas.

Jeez, they're not called the Rocky Mountains for nothing, if you need help finding some, get in touch, I've got Park Ranger friend in Estes Park. RScott

Best way to separate dirt from decorative rocks?
trees

This is in a small landscaping rock garden. The small rocks are on a 15' long & 2' wide galvanized sheet metal channel designed to direct water quickly to a front yard storm drain (or else our basement would flood). I'll need to remove the rocks & grit by hand but it's a small job. Grit from the driveway and dirt has caused the channel to fill up. What's the best way to separate the grit/dirt from the rocks? What can I use that would function in effect as a colander? Thanks.

I had a path made of small stones that filled up with soil. I scooped them out and set them on the drive way and then blasted them with a hose sprayer. It washed the dirt away and left the stones nice and clean. I scooped them back up and put them back in the walk.

You might want to try using this technique if you have someplace to blast the stones with a hose sprayer where the soil can be washed away.

I want to take out an old garden. Around it are bricks and rocks. Other than going 1 by 1 what can I do? ???
Minard Jetty, Co Kerry, Ireland.

The previous homeowners built a garden and landscaped/line it with brick and small rocks. Other than picking the rocks out one by one, does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do to clean it up? Do I have to take all the rocks out? In the future, we want to put grass in the old garden area.... HELP!!! -I'm not lazy, but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas.... Thanks,

Nope...it's one by one. If you don't get all the rocks and bricks out, you'll regret it later. Make a "save" pile, and a "trash" pile. You may want to reuse the stone and bricks somewhere sometime.

Japanese Rock Garden Designs | Gomestic

Japanese garden rock designs are steeped in history and follow the lines of nature and serenity.  Why?  Because traditional gardens where designed and created by Shinto priests and Buddhist monks as a part of paying tribute and prayer.

Japanese gardens have evolved over time and many forms of them now exist, but the basis of design still remains the same

A sense of balance must be obtained using the formula of Yin and Yang and traditional practices to keep the Japanese garden looking as good as it did yesterday.  Many gardens who appreciate the Asian style garden prefer the overall look and feel that this type of garden can provide.  These gardens simulate nature in miniature form, and can this makes it perfect for a small space garden design.

As with traditional European designs the Asian garden is not made to display flowers.  Instead they prefer to use barks, architectural leaf and trunk forms, stones; pebbles and sometimes boulders are placed imitating a mountain paradise. It all just comes down to scale.  That’s why they created the Bonsai landscape, another version of Japanese rock garden designs.

Add A Rock Garden To Your Landscape | Home and Gardening

Practically every home owner has the same type of landscape design – lots of grass, flowers and trees. For a truly unique design, try adding a rock garden.

Green grass. Trees and shrubs. Flowers. That’s what the typical landscaped lawn consists of. And properly designed, such landscapes can be quite pretty, of course. But there’s many different ways to landscape your yard – and you should consider them all before making your final decision. Let your imagination run riot.

Why not try a rock garden?

If there’s a section of your grounds where the grass just won’t grow, why not replace it with a rock garden? Of course, you don’t want to place such a garden in an area which gets a lot of water run-off. If that’s the reason why your grass won’t grow, consider fixing the drainage! But if it’s a question of bad soil, or of too much shade in the area, a rock garden is the perfect solution.

Once you create a rock garden there will be little or no maintenance for it. But that’s contingent on you building the rock garden correctly to begin with. The last thing you want is for the rocks to shift during a rainstorm, or for grasses to constantly crop up through the gaps in the stone and have to be weeded away.
