What is the best landscape for a barrier island?
récol thé...

I live on a barrier island in New Jersey and have always had a problem with people having lawns and the water they used to keep them lush and green. I've always been a proponent of a low water garden or stones to landscape a home. Someone told me that even with the water usage a lawn is better because it helps keep his home cooler and thus reduces his energy use for air conditioning his home. Does this make sense, have I been wrong all these years? He claimed that stones, mulch or sand would store heat throughout the day.

I would think that the heat stored would be negligible. You will need to contact your island authority before planting this, but I would plant sea-oats or sea-grass. It is everywhere here in the Gulf of Mexico, and may do damage to the ecosystem if it is not native to New Jersey. But, if it is not, then I would find an unpopulated portion of an island in the region, and see what is native there.

Sea-oats can thrive in sandy environments and do not require high maintenance. But again, I would check with an authority to see what they would allow on the island.

Water Garden Landscaping

University of Illinois Extension horiticulturist Jeff Rugg discusses some of the basics of water garden landscaping.

underground water in my garden?
petite pause

Hi, we have just had our garden landscaped and a small area of ground which is surrounded by slabs to put plants in is very boggy, so much so we can sink a foot into the soil. We dug down and have found 2 small areas close to each other that fill with water which is oblivously why the soil is so boggy. There are no water pipes in the immediate area and the house was built 30 years ago on farmland. Anyone have any ideas where the water is coming from amd how to rectify the problem. Is it a natural source of water or a serious problem. Only constructive suggestions only please, thanks
we keep emptying the water but it just trickles back in the holes again. there are no septic tanks nearby thank goodness.

try pulling all the water out and follow the water flow
good luck

I'm looking for a way to water my roses without having to stand there holding a hose.?
Japanese Garden

I live in Minnesota so July gets very hot with very little rain. I have heard about some people poking holes in garden hoses to water their landscaping plants and I think that sounds like a good idea. I just want to know if anyone has done it and if it worked well. I don't really want to spend even that little bit of money for something that doesn't work.

Get a five-gallon bucket (like a paint or drywall bucket), and drill a small hole (1/4" or so) in the bottom. You can do this with it plugged or not, but fill the bucket with the hose, and then let the water slowly run out the hole and soak the roots of your plants.

Plumbing cost question - can you give me an idea what a plumber would charge?
Floating house. Tonle Sap lake. Cambodia

I need to run a residential water line from the meter at the street, about fifteen feet underground, then up to a height of about three feet above ground, where there needs to be a high-quality brass valve to accept a garden hose. Not sure if I need a pressure reduction valve also, but I will assume yes. This will be a watering station for a landscaping / garden area. Any rough idea about what a job like this might cost to have done?

This is a rough, worst case estimate. Work to be done by a professional plumber M-F, 8:00 - 4:00.

Trip charge & estimating, $100.00.

You will only need a psi reducing valve if pressure exceeds 80psi. They cost about $125.00 + $50.00 to install.

You will also need a backflow preventer. Add another $100.00 + $50.00 to install.

You need a stand pipe, add $50.00 + $50.00 to install.

You need 15ft of pipe run, not 15 feet deep I am assuming?

Figure labor to be $2.50/ft + $50.00 materials.

Are you connecting to an existing line, to an extra meter or a re-claim meter? Add $50.00 to connect to the meter.

You must also figure in the cost to pull a permit, inspection & call in locates before digging. Add $150.00 or more, depends on plumber.

The contractor will likely use an excavator, add $250.00 excavator charge.

Add all of the above, add 10% fudge factor in case I missed something + tax and that may give you a rough idea.

Water gardens come to life when surrounded with aquatic plants and fish. Feng Shui enthusiast love to place these gardens outside their home entrance for good luck and increased prosperity.

This style of garden does need regular attention and performs well in an oxygenated environment.  Plants need to be secured firmly in containers, and can be held down with bricks below the water’s surface.

Tip: Don’t worry if the leaves of the plants are below the surface after planting, they will grow up to the surface in a couple of days.

The water garden is also attended by frogs, birds and native animals, so it is wise to make it safe for all.  You can provide a small step for frogs to climb out, and near the garden small treeS will provide security for native birds when hunted or startled.  It really is a wonder of life to see native wildlife enjoying youR water garden as much as you do.

Tip:You will need to feed your water lilies and aquatic plants so we recommended you purchase Aquatic plant food that is sold in pellets.  These can be directly inserted into the soil or containers every month during the warmer months.
