I'd really like to look into having someone landscape our yard in the winter because I will have more time off and can be home to keep the dogs away from the workers. I live in alb, NM and it can get pretty cold, thus the ground can be pretty hard. Is this realistic or should we wait til spring?
Doing it in the winter is fine. And actually doing it closer to fall would be better. If you can give the plants, especially woody ones such as trees and shrubs, more time to root without having the stress of intense growing at the same time, like in spring, they will be healthier and grow better.
there are some things that wont' do well so young in the winter, like annual color or ornamentals, but the larger things i would try to do as soon as you can.
Edging around a flower bed can really define a garden design, get expert tips and advice on plants, yards, and gardening in this free video ...
My husband and I would like to make our yard and the area around our front porch look nicer, but neither of us know much at all about landscaping and need the advice of good "green thumbers." We would like to spend an upcoming weekend making simple improvements that make a big difference in the overall look, and want to see how much we could do with $200 as a budget. A little more info: we have a LOT of mulched areas with NO "ground cover" (I think that's what you call it) and so weeds can get out of control (there is no "edging" either). Any recommended plants that would look nice and be easy to maintain? Or can we somehow make grass there? Any good flowers that would be durable? Our front yard has a good amount of sun during the day. Any help and ideas about spending the $200 to make a NICE improvement are GREATLY appreciated! :o)
remove the mulch yourself-$0
border the yard with used bricks ( if u are lucky you will get it for free sometimes)-$0
get soil or dirt from home depot or lowes -$25( $5 each).
go to your nursery and tell them ur light and wheather conditions they will suggest you some plants.Good thing is you get sun. Marigolds, and other seeds can make a very inexpensive garden.($10 max)
You are a little late for bulbs but u can plant them in fall by then you garden will be well prepared for them.
Ferns , palms are very less maintainnace (ferns -$5each, palms need lot of research if u want to save money ).Impatients, pansies, begonias are shade loving plants and less maintiance.since you get sun you should be fine with any plant. However your challenge will be leveling, making the soil ready to plant.Good luck you can do a lot in $200 spent wisely and with patience.Dont hurry take your time.
I have a house situated on 3000 sq meters of lawn that I
have to maintain, any suggestions how I can eliminate
some of the lawn in some type of landscape so that I
will not have so much grass to cut. I have trees and small
plants, and the plants are in a plant bed in the front of
my porch, but there is just so much grass to cut all around
the house I want to cut less, how can I do it. TKS.
We are on a little over an acre and have the same problem.
We made several raised beds with rock borders to highlight different areas of the yard. Some beds are kidney shaped and some are rounder. We put mulch (bought in bulk from the nursery) and compost. It also makes it easier to garden and the plants love it. We bought plants that were drought tolerant (went to the Master Gardeners cooperative extension of the University - they give free and friendly advice on all aspects of landscape) I am sure you probably have that in your area or you can talk to them on the internet. It's a funny thing, they don't recommend zero scapes, plants are necessary.
I thought I would miss the grass, but we actually improved the look of the lot.
We planted 22 pine trees with large wells also. That created a "pathway effect". Many pines were facing the north side of our house because we get heavy north winds. The trees will grow up and help prevent wind damage.
In one of the raised beds, we created our very first vegetable garden and now we dont worry about getting ecoli. All our salads are fresh and wonderful. We actually put the garden beds over our sprinklers in our sprinkler system and they are automatically watered.
We put paths through the vegetable gardens by laying down the black weedproof fabric and putting mulch over it. We set up a "sitting area" where we put our garden table and supplies as well as have coffee in the morning. We put our vegetable gardens facing south southwest.
The yard looks fabulous and we still have "green".

I have a huge front yard. Its divided in half by my drive way. On one side is a large grassy corner with a stop sign and a speed limit sign in the tip of it. Its just too plain but I'm not sure how to landscape it. Please send me any links of pictures or explain your ideas. There are a lot of kids that walk the neighborhood and cut my corner so I can't do anything like a pond.
Please send me any ideas!
you could make a flower bed in the corner and plant a couple of nice trees in your yard, maybe dogwood or crape myrtle.

My front landscape planter alongside the garage has a deep vacuous hole exposing the foundation under the garage. How can I fix this?
Fill it in.

Landscape Your Yard on the Cheap - landscaping - Lifehacker
A Money Magazine writer runs through some common fixes that, while not exactly automatic, don't require a whole day's work or a hired crew. The tips range from basic lawn maintenance (cut the grass to three inches, not less) to improvement ideas (stock up on impatiens, verbena, or zinnias). This real beginners' tip, quoted from Lewes, Del. landscaper Chris Valenti, clears up at least one source of anxiety for anyone trying to spruce things up:
Some Simple Guidelines for Landscaping The Back Yard With Concrete ...
Concrete may not look like an appealing thing to have in your yard when you first hear about it, but in fact landscape gardening with concrete has made leaps and bounds in the past ten years. At present concrete landscaping is all the rage and it is very pretty too. Many home owners can start staining concrete to create the look that they want for their yards. With concrete acid stains it really is not hard. Here are some of our tips on how to stain concrete .
Several areas of your yard can benefit from using concrete landscaping elements. Most people use concrete landscape gardening ideas and designs for the walks and paths that wind through their gardens. Concrete landscape gardening is mostly incorporated in bigger yards, but it can even be done in smaller gardens. You could put down a lively patio that you and your friends could it at to have drinks or tea. When it’s a nice day outside, there’s nothing better than a great party on the terrace.
Concrete landscaping has grown in popularity through it’s use of rock walls. The entire house form will be made of walls. The picture done in your front and back garden are glorious and with the steely frame. Besides just walls, there are also quite a few other reasons to have concrete landscaping. These walls are ideal for keeping your pets in the garden. If you have a dog that is prone to run away then look into this kind of concrete landscaping. These walls also serve an additional purpose of keeping unwanted visitors out. By improving the security on your home, you can foil burglars before they even try. After you check into this style of concrete landscaping, discuss it with a professional.
