Hear why landscape architecture is an important and a sometimes misunderstood profession from landscape architects and other professionals in ...
How can I entice an american company to hire me to work remotely when i move to thailand?
I am a skilled drafter with a bachelors in landscape architecture and I have some experience in the field of civil engineering as well. i am moving to thailand next month for work but i could really make ends meet over there if I worked a second job as a drafter at an american company, working remotely. Because of the good exchange rate I would be happy to work for a minimal pay rate (say $12/hr). I am also guessing employers could save on taxes because they wouldnt have to report it?? (let me know if thats true) Should I be open when applying to job openings on craigslist or other job posts: tell them I would be cheap and cost you less in overhead because im out of country????
Here is the problem, at $12/hour, you're not remotely competitive with the rates offered by firms from China, India, or Eastern Europe. As a one man show, you will not have the capacity to turn out the volume they need as well. To make things worst, with the depressed market here, local consulting drafters are offering lower price. You're missing the point on the tax as well, we can write off 1099 at 100%. Paying you cash actually cost more money. Then finally, if you don't have any US experience, I have to assume you will take twice the time to deliver drawings since you will not be familiar with local codes and methods of construction. In order to entice anyone to hire you as a consultant, you need to offer something that will make the company profitable.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the north shore of Long Island was home to some of the wealthiest human beings to ever walk the Earth. From Great Neck to Huntington, palaces, mansions, and homes of various sizes, shaes and designs domianted the landscape with owners named Vanderbilt, Whitney, Chrysler, Woolworth, Guggenheim, Frick, Morgan, Field, Phipps, Garvan, duPont to name a few. Have you ever heard of these homes and would you support legislation to preserve them as examples of LI and American History and Architecture for generations to come?
Why yes I have heard of them and have visited almost all of them and they are breath taking. I would support legislation to preserve them because they are pieces of history and deserve it. Maybe we can use some of the tax dollars that are spent on stupid things to a cause that is much more deserving.
House #1
A 20 room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American household does in a year. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2,400. In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not situated in a Northern or Midwestern "snow belt" area. It's in the South.
House #2
Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university. This house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house is 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American Southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Surrounding flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the surrounding rural landscape.

House #2 George Bush's house.....People had better wake up to the fact the Algore does NOT intend to live by the same standards that he wants to make US live by....I don't like using the word hypocrite but Algore is the definition of it.

HOUSE #1 is outside of Nashville, Tennessee; it is the abode of the "environmentalist" Al Gore.
HOUSE #2 is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas; it is the residence the of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

An "inconvenient truth" about Al Gore, or what?
Noah, come on, man. Gore just won a Nobel Prize for something he doesn't practice. How does "shooting the messenger" fit here? He shot himself.
And as far as wind power, California tried to put some more windmills in besides the ones in Indio, and the locals shot 'em down because of the lubricant dropping from the propellers and the noise pollution from them. Speaking of lubricant, how does wind power make us less dependent on oil? Machines have to be oiled.
I won't charge you the dollars, but I like my donuts glazed, by the way.
Shooting the messenger doesn't address the problem. The Bush administration still backs the use of unlimited fossil fuel and is even willing to invade other countries to get it. (Yeah..it's not about oil and other fables.) Gore has led a movement to free ourselves from what is essentially a 19th century technology...oil and coal. The Bush administration doesn't want the use of oil and coal to diminish...that would be bad for the oil and coal mafias. Gore is in favor of new industries such as wind and solar and I'll bet a dollar to a donut that most people, given a choice, would prefer clean power sources to polluting power sources. The Bush administration has fought against raising the CAFE standards to increase miles per gallon in the auto industry. Gore has pointedly suggested that raising the CAFE standards would go a long way toward reducing greenhouse gases. He's also on the record as being in favor of alternate fuels to keep the wheels on the road. The Bush administration spent most of the its time in office backing the idea that human activity has nothing to do with climate change...even in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence. Gore began to question using our onion skin thin atmosphere as a dumping ground for pollution and greenhose gases over twenty years ago. The list goes on. The point here being while Gore can get a slap on the side of the head for the home he's owned in for two decades and Bush should get his @ss kissed for being personally 'mo green, that doesn't alter the fact that Gore is right on the issues of pollution and climate change and the Bush Junta and his polluting pals are wrong. I'll give you credit for a darn good smear..at least it's original, but as I said....it doesn't address the issue!

A special thanks should go out to Julie Zigler with Irrigation Design Source for pulling the entire event together. This was the first year Julie couldn't be with us on the actual day of the golf outing, but thank you to April Westcott (Irrigation Design Source) and Jhennifer Sanchez (Smock Fansler Corporation) for standing in for Julie and doing a wonderful job! Also thank you for keeping us all hydrated and well fed during the day.
