I'm currently a student in a rather prestigious university (Purdue), majoring in Landscape Architecture. I'm only a freshman, but I like it a lot. The undergraduate program in LA is well recognized (ranked in the top 10 in LA by Design Intelligence). The only problem is that I don't know if the profession is all that it is hyped up to be. Any insight on this would be helpful.
I'm also thinking about Business Construction Management, which is another program here that I am considering.
My current academic GPA is a 3.0, if this helps.
Actually, i think it is a pretty bad a$$ job. If you like to be outside...if you like to be creative...if you like drawing both by hand and on the computer...its a great job!! I have a great friend that does LA, he owns his own company and is doing great and he love it.
Personally i am a creative person, and love the creative aspects of my job (sorta similar to LA). you just have to figure out what is important to you about your future career.

Staking a Claim :: DesignIntelligence
The economy has been distressed for more than a year. Executives and decision makers are scrambling to sustain their businesses under unprecedented conditions. Design and planning work continues in spite of the frozen credit markets, yet the challenge is not only how to get work but how to price it. Debates in design firms occur over the cost of design services and the value of these services in a down economy. The negative implication of reduced scopes reinforces a view that design is a luxury.
This economy affects our self-esteem and our livelihood. Having lived through numerous boom and bust cycles, I can share several observations about their contrasting characteristics. In a booming economy the pace of opportunity is quick, a premium is placed on the speed of delivery, and the price of consulting is high. Busting economies are characterized by slow, deliberate decision making on the part of clients. During these times, consultants focus on doing excellent work and on critical analysis as a means of achieving great work and satisfied clients. Design is germane to progress. The products of design mark the advance of civilization and culture. Critical design practices respond to the issues proffered by our world and our time. To prove value, design must be comprehensive, rigorous, and deliver measurable results on the most challenging issues of the day.

I recently found myself on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona, and it was there I had an opportunity to visit the ambitious John T. Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies. It is an interesting unit of the College of Environmental Design, which includes architecture, urban studies, landscape architecture, and art.
Here is a picture of me with Denise L. Lawrence, Ph.D., an anthropology professor who splits her time teaching architecture and regenerative studies. It’s a curious picture, and you may be wondering what it is we are doing out in the sun. In fact, we are admiring the harvest of the elephant garlic grown on campus. Quite the specimens!
But most important, Lawrence has a fascinating read on the future of the design professions, one that is worth heeding. She says we need to have positive expectations about the future — not just avoid the negative ones. She sees hope for the future because of the interest and actions taken by the students on campus and by the professional practices employing their graduates (firms like HMC located close by in Ontario, Calif).
