CAD for construction trades? Plumbing? Landscape? Architecture? Careers?
DSCN7164

I'm a print graphic designer (packaging) and I'm looking for a career change. I'd love to get into a more technical field where my experience is at least somewhat relative.

What are the industry standard applications? Mac? I've done a little 3d in Lightwave and Modo but it REALLY doesn't interest me. I'm looking more at the technical aspects.

Any ideas? Advice?

1. BArch (- 7 years to complete) - Architect

2. Bdes (Hons) Architectural Property Development - (3 years to complete) - Real estate agent, housing associations, property development, local councils, renovation advisor or interior stylist.

3.Bdes (Hons) Inclusive Design - ( 3 years to complete) - same as 2 + virtual reality visualisation, landscape designer, healthcare environments designer

4.BSC (Hons) Architectural Design Technology - (3 years to complete) - works closely with architects and can design small projects also bridges the gap between Architects drawing and production on a building sight - Architectural Technician.

5.Bsc (Hons) Architectural Visualisation - (3 years to complete) - same as 4 but produces real time models on computer of Architects drawing 3D modelling etc

6.Bsc (Hons) Computer Aided Design and Construction - (3 years to complete) - draw plans like architects but using computers and can also redraw an architect's drawing and subject it to engineering laws or assess the impact of a drawing to solutions on existing settings .

7.Bsc (Hons) Design Technology - ( 3 years to complete)same as 5 but they design a building in parallel with engineering technology e.g. design a building including the lift or mechanical stair system -

8.Bsc (Hons) Interior Architecture Design - ( 3 years to complete) - finishing designers e.g. film or theatre design, exhibition hall designer etc

9.Bsc ( Hons) Product Design and Innovation - (3 Years to complete) - same as 7 but they actually specialise in the design of the product like the details of the lift or details of the hydraulic doors.

Well I hope this gives you light but you actually need to get a career counsellor

Prepare for landscape architecture?
DSCN3795

I want to be a landscape architect. I am currently doing my GE's at a Community college. I will transfer to Cal Poly Slo. What should I do to better prepare myself? I heard it is helpful to learn photoshop and auto-cad. Can you suggest some books i can start reading or things i should do to make my time at cal poly a little easier?

Below are some links to give you a general idea as you will see it varies.
It is my understanding that in some states NOT CA though.you can almost buy a degree for $250.

3rd Year Landscape Architecture Student....what kind of work should I expect to be doing when I graduate?
DSCN7166

I am a third year LA student, and have a pretty good grasp of what the field has to offer. However, design is very subjective and I am curious as to what kind of work I can expect to be doing after school.

I doubt I would actually be designing for a while, but is mindless CAD work excpected? I know it depends on firm/firm but in general. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately Archictects are a lot like Med students. You do a lot of work and you're still in the "student" status. You will spend countless years as an intern. Most firms will probably require you to get an advnaced/Master's degree. You'll be brand new in a place where there's an average of 10-15 years experience surrounding you. You have a long way to go. But the good news is that since it's a requirement to have an advanced degree you may be able to get into a firm that will pay for you to get your degree. Use that opportunity to learn and go back to school on your company's dime. But for the most part your job will be to just keep learning

  • Do You Need A Landscape Architect To Design Your Landscape | Tips ...

Who are landscape architects? To become a landscape architect usually requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in landscape. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are two undergraduate professional degrees: a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA). Typically, these degrees entail four or five years of study in design, construction techniques, art, history, natural and social sciences.

For landscape architects seeking advanced degrees, there are two routes. Those who hold undergraduate degrees in landscape architecture can earn their Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) in two years. If you hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than landscape architecture and want to go into landscape architecture, the MLA usually takes three years of full-time study.

In 2007, 61 U.S. colleges and universities offered 79 undergraduate and graduate programs in landscape architecture that were accredited by the Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

Left Brain / Right Brain ---- Deering Design: RIGHT BRAIN - Hand ...

With more than 30 years of landscape architecture behind us, we've experienced two very different approaches to presenting plans. I am referring to hand-drawing and computer aided design (CAD). While both have pluses and minuses, CAD has all but eliminated hand-drawing - I only sketch while at the table (eating) and while a passenger in a car - all of the rest of the time, I "draw" on the computer. And I was one of those artistic designers who could draw beautiful plans with nice designer lettering. The ability to revise, transmit (by email or posting) and store electronic files has out-weighed the value of hand drawing. Only the older principals at big firms are computer illiterate - they are the only ones who can afford to be. It seems that since the beginning of CAD, 3-D capability has been the holy grail - unattainable except for the biggest offices (means they have people who just do that). 3-D CAD is used by many architectural firms, some civil engineering firms, and a small...
