I'm a print graphic designer (packaging) and I'm looking for a career change. I'd love to get into a more technical field where my experience is at least somewhat relative.
What are the industry standard applications? Mac? I've done a little 3d in Lightwave and Modo but it REALLY doesn't interest me. I'm looking more at the technical aspects.
Any ideas? Advice?
1. BArch (- 7 years to complete) - Architect
2. Bdes (Hons) Architectural Property Development - (3 years to complete) - Real estate agent, housing associations, property development, local councils, renovation advisor or interior stylist.
3.Bdes (Hons) Inclusive Design - ( 3 years to complete) - same as 2 + virtual reality visualisation, landscape designer, healthcare environments designer
4.BSC (Hons) Architectural Design Technology - (3 years to complete) - works closely with architects and can design small projects also bridges the gap between Architects drawing and production on a building sight - Architectural Technician.
5.Bsc (Hons) Architectural Visualisation - (3 years to complete) - same as 4 but produces real time models on computer of Architects drawing 3D modelling etc
6.Bsc (Hons) Computer Aided Design and Construction - (3 years to complete) - draw plans like architects but using computers and can also redraw an architect's drawing and subject it to engineering laws or assess the impact of a drawing to solutions on existing settings .

8.Bsc (Hons) Interior Architecture Design - ( 3 years to complete) - finishing designers e.g. film or theatre design, exhibition hall designer etc

Well I hope this gives you light but you actually need to get a career counsellor

I'm currently a student in a rather prestigious university (Purdue), majoring in Landscape Architecture. I'm only a freshman, but I like it a lot. The undergraduate program in LA is well recognized (ranked in the top 10 in LA by Design Intelligence). The only problem is that I don't know if the profession is all that it is hyped up to be. Any insight on this would be helpful.
I'm also thinking about Business Construction Management, which is another program here that I am considering.
My current academic GPA is a 3.0, if this helps.
Actually, i think it is a pretty bad a$$ job. If you like to be outside...if you like to be creative...if you like drawing both by hand and on the computer...its a great job!! I have a great friend that does LA, he owns his own company and is doing great and he love it.
Personally i am a creative person, and love the creative aspects of my job (sorta similar to LA). you just have to figure out what is important to you about your future career.
I see Construction Science, Landscape Architecture, and Enviormental Design. I was also wondering if I could take any of these and also become an architect?
Yes they do!
Here is the website to check out the program. It will take you straight to the architecture dept.

My hubby & I are buying a "fixer-upper" home. What's a good magazine for ideas on both interior & exterior design (including landscaping, decks, construction, architecture, styles, flooring, kitchens, baths, etc....)?
Laurie c has some good suggestions (I'm kind of biased about one in particular!). FYI Fine Homebuilding includes a mix of technical material for contractors and design-oriented material for homeowners.
As for This Old House, you can get a lot of good info on our website, including free video clips showing how to install, repair or maintain all sorts of things around the house. Here's our directory of home improvement topics:

And if you want to see what's in the current issue of the magazine, just click on the "Magazine" button located at the far right hand side of the page, under the "Search" window.
By the way, we also send out free electronic newsletters on 5 different topics (one covers design solutions and room makeovers). You can sign up for one or all of them.
Hey I have no idea what college I want to go to.. I want to go to a college that is around a very foresty area. I want to major in either psychology or do something with landscaping or Architecture or Construction. I am mainly looking to major in psychology at this given time. Your help in this matter is most appreciated!
Try colleges in Oregon or Washington. Even Colorado. Those places are very "green" and good for someone who likes the outdoors. They seem to have good universities in those states.

Deciduous Shrub Of The Day
'Tonto' grows best in full sun with rich, moist soil but will tolerate less hospitable positions in the landscape just as well, once it becomes established. Foliage hangs on well in fall due to tolerance to leaf spot diseases. It grows well in limited soil spaces in urban areas such as along boulevards, in parking lots, and in small pavement cutouts if provided with some irrigation until well established. They tolerate clay and alkaline soil well. This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people.
Many crapemyrtles are magnets for a host-specific aphid that only infests crapemyrtle, not other plants. The damage this causes is not lethal to crapemyrtle. Many beneficial insects which feed on pests that damage other landscape plants use this aphid for food. In this way, the crapemyrtle aphid serves as prey for beneficial insects. Therefore, planting crapemyrtle that attract aphids can enhance biological control of insect pests on other plants in the landscape.
