Through England and Scotland and into Ireland on my bike ...
Good day, everyone! Welcome to the first post of my first blog. I was hoping to share some writing earlier – perhaps before leaving the States – but as my departure approached I found myself scrambling to make the last minute preparations for this study-abroad and cycling adventure. So, from this quaint town in Northern Ireland known as Ballycastle, I’m finally sitting down to explain how I got here and what’s in store.
This coming semester I will be studying Economics, Law and Creative Writing in London and Oxford University thanks to a direct-enrollment program sponsored by IES, the Institute for International Education for Students. I spent the past several months training for a Half Ironman (a 70.3 mile triathlon, which took place August 1) so before my academics begin I decided to combine the advantages of my geographic and physical-fitness situations and tour the UK and Ireland on a bike. That said, the UK’s one of the most expensive places in the world, and tourism isn’t a cheap hobby. To overcome these obstacles I make use of various networks, such as alumni from my international high school, Couchsurfing.org and WarmShowers.org (a site that connects cycle tourist offering hospitality to other cycle tourists). Better yet, these networks give me the precious opportunity to meet locals, stay in their homes and live a day or night of their lives. While I thoroughly enjoy the challenges and joys of cycle touring – navigating, mountain climbing, finding accomodation, cruising through breathtaking views – the best part of the journey is always found in the people I meet.

“Vancouver’s Six-Acre Living Roof” (04:31)
It’s rare that landscape architecture and horticulture are brought together into a work of cinematic art, but Dave Budge has accomplished the feat with this fine short film about the new green roof crowning the Vancouver Convention Center. It may sound boring but the shots are brilliantly composed, with straight lines of rigid steel and aluminum juxtaposed against swirling waves of native grasses and flowers. The shimmering expanse of Burrard Inlet serves as the backdrop, and everything grooves to the moody strains of the Icelandic rock band Sigur Rós.
This living roof is the brainchild of Bruce Hemstock, a landscape architect who rhapsodizes about urban parks. Green architecture is all the rage in cities. New York recently cut the ribbon on the gorgeous High Line Park , built along rusted old rail lines on which goods were once carried down the West Side of Manhattan. The video about Vancouver...
