3rd Year Landscape Architecture Student....what kind of work should I expect to be doing when I graduate?

I am a third year LA student, and have a pretty good grasp of what the field has to offer. However, design is very subjective and I am curious as to what kind of work I can expect to be doing after school.

I doubt I would actually be designing for a while, but is mindless CAD work excpected? I know it depends on firm/firm but in general. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately Archictects are a lot like Med students. You do a lot of work and you're still in the "student" status. You will spend countless years as an intern. Most firms will probably require you to get an advnaced/Master's degree. You'll be brand new in a place where there's an average of 10-15 years experience surrounding you. You have a long way to go. But the good news is that since it's a requirement to have an advanced degree you may be able to get into a firm that will pay for you to get your degree. Use that opportunity to learn and go back to school on your company's dime. But for the most part your job will be to just keep learning

I am doing research for a landscape architecture firm about how they can pump water from the ocean to their resort using wind power. One of my ideas which I have heard much about is attaching an archimedes screw to a windmill or some sort...but I can't find any pictures or diagrams of one! can somebody help please?

Everyone compliments me on my handwriting. Can I make money writing for people?

I hand-drafted for a landscape architecture firm for a few years, and have really spent my whole life messing with my handwriting. I can write like an architect, and my regular, writing myself notes handwriting is very unique. I'm wondering if there is a market for this skill, like illustrating children's books or something? and how do i get into it?

Contact some publishing companies -- they can set you on the "write" path.

You can also make money addressing invitations. You just need to get your information out that you do it.

Landscape Architecture Internship Abroad?

Are there any landscape architects or students of the profession who have gone abroad during their years of studies and worked as an intern in a foreign firm? How difficult is it to get to that point? What year students are they most likely to accept? Is it essential to be fluent in their language? What credentials would put you over the top of an easier to hire local student?

My school does a lot of out of country internships. Speaking the language where you are going to work is really important. Usually you go for an internship between Junior and Senior year so that after you work all summer you finish the last year of school and usually return to work for the company you interned with. What will set you apart is motivation. Make contacts and phone calls. Good luck!

  • Business Quarterly Survey Finds Positive Signs for Landscape ...

Survey. While most firms still face serious economic challenges, small improvements emerged across all indicators – including hiring.

Fully 32 percent of firm representatives responding indicated normal or above billable hours in the second quarter of 2009, compared to 25.2 percent last quarter. In addition, 32.2 percent reported normal or above inquiries for work, representing an increase from 25.3 percent last quarter. Approximately one in seven firms (14.3 percent) plan to hire, a slight increase from 11.2 percent previously.

“We remain cautiously optimistic that these positive signs point to the start of a real recovery. However, many hurdles still exist for firms. Private sector projects face challenges in securing financing, strong competition exists for limited public work and larger firms are finding many projects coming from overseas,” said Nancy Somerville, Executive Vice President and CEO of ASLA .

The survey also asked firm representatives...

As a freshman running back for the Buckeyes, George was an instant contributor. He scored 3 rushing touchdowns in a win over Syracuse University. However, he suffered a major setback in a game against the University of Illinois. In that game, George fumbled at Illinois' 4-yard line that was returned 96 yards for a touchdown. Later in the game, with Ohio State leading by 2 points in the final quarter, George fumbled again, this time on Illinois' 1-yard line. Illinois recovered the fumble and drove for the game winning touchdown.

Before the Illinois game, George had carried the ball 25 times and scored 5 touchdowns, but for the rest of the season, he had only 12 more rushing attempts and didn't score once. In the following season, George was used as the team's third string running back, behind Raymont Harris. He carried the ball only 42 times, mostly when Ohio State had a large lead late in games.

As a senior...George rushed for a school record 1,927 yards and 24 touchdowns,...
