I am in Japan for a few weeks. I used to live here so I have seen the Kyoto gardens and the usual Japanese garden stuff. However, I am now a student in landscape architecture and I would like to explore more of the contemporary/recent designs here in Japan. Does anyone know of any designed specifically by lanscape architects or land artists in the Tokyo, Saitama, or Kyushu areas?
This might sound crazy, but since no one else has tried I will. Rent The Karate Kid. Go right to the credits and see who the set designer was. Search the web and try to contact. I'll bet whoever it is has a lot of contacts here and there. That's the best wild guess I have. Sayonara

Historic spots, Modern architecture, Scenic beauty, I don't care.
I've been to Korea to take pictures of them and it was awesome than I thought.so I want to try another one in Northeast Asia. the decision is Japan.:) Please let me know some fantastic specific places!
Every corner of the country.
Kinkakuji (Kyoto, Japan)
Himeiji Castle (Himeiji, Japan)
Tokyo Tower (best to go at night)
Todaiji Temple (Nara, Japan)
Those are the ones I can think of at the moment, for more ideas check out my blog (in my profile) as I am currently travelling in Japan.
I'm wanting to travel extensively, see the landscape, shrines, temples, architecture and get to know the ancient Japan and modern Japan. Any ideas on ways to really immerse myself in the culture would really help. I'm looking for ideas of places to go, stay, and what to try. Also, about how much it would cost would be nice. My budget isn't unlimited. Thank you.
Wow...you are gonna need a lot of information. For ancient Japan I would suggest visiting Kyoto and Nara for sure. There are amazing places to see all over the place there. Osaka and Tokyo are great for seeing modern Japan. If in Osaka, go visit Umeda and Dotonbori. I haven't been to Tokyo but you can check out Kabukicho (kinda dangerous) or Shinjuku. Try to visit small, out of the way places. Stay at a Ryokan and make sure to try the Onsen! In Osaka try the Takoyaki and the Okonomiyaki. Awesome food in Osaka. Geeze..too much to mention.

The Roman Landscape [750 BMA - 400MA]
The Romans carried out landscape design on a scale not seen again until recently. They left a strong imprint on the land. The Romans designed large urban open spaces with perforated edges. These public open spaces were designed to keep the masses entertained – a point highlighted in the movie Gladiator. They combined garden and lifestyle ideas from the Greeks, Etruscans, Persians and Egyptians. In comparison to their public environments their residential site developments were typically inward looking.
