I am very interested and highly considering majoring in landscape architecture. I'm just wondering how stable of a job it is... What is the demand for landscape architects?

Normally it is very steady. Jobs for every profession are hard to find in a recession. Changes in demand for landscape architectural services due to economic fluctuations may lag behind other professions, due to its implementation at the end of the construction process.

Landscape Architects Job Description

i have found some landscaping jobs but i dont have the equipment to do them, how would i go about making money out of these jobs?

You must have the essentials. Lawnmower , leaf blower , weed wacker/ edger, and hand tools rakes shovel etc. .I the Jobs you beyond normal landscaping maintainance. Such as retaing walls rock gardens Koi/fish ponds complete shrubery replacement or installment . You can rent back hoes and other equipment just during the period of that job. If you need workers if not in your town there must be a near by town where you can find day laborors looking for work You can spot them if you see a crowd of people standing on a corner of "main" street USA .After completion tell your custermer you are a new business and if they like your work please tell their friends and colleuges. This is better than any advertizement in the paper you pay for PS again after your down not before you started. knowing you are just starting out will give them a sence of inconfidence but once they see your work You being new in the business won't matter at at

I am studying civil engineering because of the job security. However, I want to do landscape architecture but I am unsure whether I would receive job placement as easily.

It depends on the region you will work/live in. The company I work for builds commerical and residential developments all over the country, but certain parts of the U.S. require more architects, builders, construction workers, etc. than others. Do some research and find out where architectural developments are expected to be steady over the next few years. Use state, local, county government websites as well as the Dept. of Agriculture websites.

I am a landscape architecture student and i have found couple landscape residential jobs but im not sure how to give a price to the client plus how much do you charge to install sprinkler system ive heard its 2 bucks per square inch. thanks

It depends on what type of sprinkler system too.

I have just had one installed where he had to dig thru rocks, we live in Central Oregon where we grow the darn things.

We paid $1200 for two days hard work

I can't decide which of the two I should major in.
I've always envision myself working for in a big company, and perhaps travel a lot across countries (this sounds business like, but i have no interest in business).
It seems like with the current societal emphasis on the environment, landscape architecture will ensure my a job after graduation, but architecture seems more exciting and can bring me international opportunities?
Ahh..I don't decide...can anyone with experience in either of the two fields provide me some personalized information on the two professions?

You must ask yourself if you really like plants and the environment. Most people who become LAs are oriented toward botany and horticulture as well as design. They also must have a strong understanding of the natural world because a great deal of the new work is aimed at ecological restoration such as restoring disturbed streams or reforesting large pieces of land, a process called mitigation. More and more this job is including land and community planning, which has a big influence on how our residential world will be created for the future.

You must ask yourself if you really love buildings. Because architecture is dependent on a building and construction, this job requires very strong art, math and visualization skills. It has little to do with ecology but there is a strong emphasis on solar design and energy conservation. You will always be tied to new construction.

Today both professions require strong skills in computer aided design (CAD) systems. They are office jobs with very little client contact or real design opportunities until you are quite high in the company. Both these professions are hard hit by the economic downturn, but at least landscape architecture has a future in retrofitting water consuming landscapes with resource conservative ones. It also has the ecological projects, often funded by government and institutions which are less dependent on new construction.

Above all, you must love your work, and have the artistic talent to be competitive. And if you aren't passionate enough about the environment or about creating buildings, then it might be better to keep looking.
