Where can I find Landscape Design drawings, examples for my backyard?
Courtyard "antique"

New homeowner. Have a large rectangle patch of dirt for a backyard. Have asked the man who mows my front yard if he can help landscape the back. He said he can but he needs me to provide a proper drawing of exactly what I want first. He will charge for labor. I don't have a lot of cash so I am looking for example plans/ drawings that I can borrow from.
I am from London but I actually live in San Diego.

My husband is a retired landscape designer but still does it when we need extra money, only problem is we live in Detroit Michigan and I'm guessing that you live in London England. That being said, maybe you could go to your local garden center, they might just have a person there that works with landscape design.

Things to keep in mind for landscape design?
Front Yard 6-Aug

I am currently trying plan a design for my backyard landscape, does anyone know of anythings I should keep in mind? I live in zone 10b and have dogs and know that I want something relatively low maintainance. What are things that are more on the actual design side that I should think about?

Several things.
1. Water movement and pooling - if you have areas that are more wet, look for plants that prefer wet soil.
2. Sun - obviously know what type of light the plant likes.
3. pH. Plants that like a higher pH soil are happier next to the house in most soils. Typically, the foundation of a house is concrete which leaks lime into the soil.
4. Roots - most trees should be 10 feet from the house. Be careful with Silver Maple, Cherry and Redwood. Trees like these can actually push in the walls of a submerged basement, tear up sidewalks and wreak havoc.
5. Compatibility. Some plants are toxic to other plants. Black Walnut will kill just about everything around it.
6. Size at maturity. People buy "cute" shrubs because they like the flowers or color. 10 years later, they're living in Sleeping Beauty's castle, surrounded by a jungle.
7. Color arrangement. Consider different layers - light greens, white, reds, etc. Don't just use monotone green. Contrast the color of the house with a shrub, then put another contrast in front of that. If you have room - 3 layers is very luxurious looking.
8. Maintenance. If you don't want to trim or divide, look for things that grow more slowly. In 10b, you probably use Bermuda grass? Consider putting in solid flowerbed edging to stop or severely deter invasive runners. If you have Fescue, you don't have to worry as much.
9. Flowers. Leave limited space for annuals if you want some really amazing color. Otherwise, look at some perennials. Note, however, that Perennials get bigger and bigger each year.
10. Fire. This is more an issue in dry climates. Consider rock against the house rather than mulch. Mulch is very VERY flamable in hot dry weather. Even in the moderate areas of the Northeast, it's not uncommon for catastrophic fires to start in flowerbeds when someone flips a burning cigarette into someone's yard and it lands in the mulch.
11. Shade - put deciduous trees around the south and west sides. The leaves will reduce your power bills in the summer. But they will drop their leaves in the winter allowing that sun to warm the house. Of course - in 10b, this might not matter! Go with Palm Trees!
12. Go Native. Look for plants that are native to your area. They're more likely to survive weather cycles. Imported plants are most prone to escape and cause environmental problems. Look at Honeysuckle in the Northeast, Kudzu in the South, etc.

Back Yard 6-Aug

I need some backyard landscaping designs to get ideas for my own yard. Is there a website where I can find these? Or if you can send me the design or your backyard it would be appreciated. I live in arizona and have a fairly big backyard any ideas (ie. what plants, trees rocks, grass, stone walkways etc.) thanks

I was looking for something else and came acrossed a website that offers tips on finding good landscape software. The sidebar to the left on the site shows available software. Here it is. Hope it helps!

In designing the landscape of a backyard, is it ok looks-wise to mix colors of concrete blocks?
Back Yard 6-Aug

We have concrete planters in our backyard that are constructed with tan split face blocks. However, we are going to get a wall that will be shared with a neighbor, who prefers gray. Do you think gray and tan blocks can be mixed and still look like a well designed backyard, or should we try to ask our neighbor he he will compromise with a tan wall to match our planters?
Thanks for any help!!

I have done masonry, hadscaping for almost 7 years now, (dont mind the username) i would recomend doing a double course wall, which in fact would make it possible for both of you to get your way, your neighbors side would b e gray and yours tan, its quite simple actually considering most walls should be double wide to last . the problem would be after that the Cap stones, but honestly u can pick a different than the two color on a compromise, or stager every other, Which isnt that bad, considering hardscaping is an art, its personal preference. so if you can picture it... bottom course is gonna be two blocks wide... the finished face on ur side is tan, and the finshed side on ur neighbors gray, build from there... and for the face of the wall in the front do one and in the back do the other so they fit together like L's but make the one in the front the same color as the wall would be visible from the street, or source of view for the passing eye. if you have any questions, please feel free to send me a message with ur email, and i can contact u on a more reliable source.. thank you and hope this was helpfull
