What tropical native plants can go into a landscape design with four beds and a large pond?
community garden

All the garden beds have different types of plants which have overgrown and become untidy.
This landscape is in tropical Nth Queensland, Australia

where do you live? here in florida, gingers are very good, as are all the llillies - canna, calla, louisiana & african. although technically not native, they are semi or full tropicals. also, plumeria (frangipangi or hawaiian lei flower) is good.

How much does simple bed landscaping in Dallas cost?
community garden

We've got some simple shrubs along the front of our one-story brick ranch. Am thinking about having a professional come in and re-design these beds to add more character and color. Obviously the cost would range depending on the landscaper and the plants used...but I have no idea even what type of range re-doing these beds would cost. Also, any resources for planning your own beds (with actual plants and pics, otherwise I find it too overwhelming!) would be appreciated.

How much space are you talking about? And yes, you sort of answered your own question by saying you know the cost will depend on the particular landscaper, and what plant you'll use.

To give you some perspective, My mom had a few plans and estimates done for a house she had. The areas she wanted done were fairly big. She had estimates ranging from about $800 to $8000.

Thinks to think about when you call around, are:

1) Do you want easy, low maintenance? Are you willing to put in a littel time now and then for some really wonderful things? Or would you settle for some less interesting, "durable" plants & shrubs (like the ones you already have) that you can ignore.

2) Do you want flowers? shrubs? Flowers you can cut and bring inside to enjoy?

3) How about trees? - Deciduous? Evergreen? Shade?

Possibly go to a nursery, and take a stroll, with a little note pad. Write down the names of plants that catch your eye. You can bring these up with the landscaper. You may also get ideas about the costs of different things.

What are some good web sites which will help me design a Wall and flower bed in front of my house?

A good landscape program for the computer would be helpful also.

my favorite sites are hgtv.com (this for garden planning) and www.perennials.com for great info about plants, zones and other key information for a wonderful garden

What's an aesthetic design for the exterior of a swimming pool?
community garden

recently, I had installed an above ground 12 foot diameter pool. the grass has been killed off around the surrounding area, and I have only had time to put a few potted tropical plants in places.
I wont be doing any major work now with summer almost over, but I want to design over the winter something nice to do for next year. A running deck even to the top of the pool isnt an option. but what about one that is 1 foot off the ground? so that it could be walked on, have pool toys sit there and that way my kids and i dont have to walk in the mud around it?
should it be wood or some other material? wood seems like high maintenance. I guess I could just build a landscaping bed but it might get ruined with too muich water when it splashes out and it drains when i clean it once a month.

thank you for any suggestions.:)

one thing you might consider is a cool deck this is a deck that no matter how hot it gets this deck will not burn your feet.they do work i have been on them bare footed. and you can have any color you want owner of pool company for eleven years.

How much would it cost to start a lawn care business with the insurance and all?
community garden

How much does it cost to start a lawn care and landscaping business dealing with: retaining walls, mulch beds, laying out landscape designs, lawn mowing, and constructions of decks and patios. And also what would be the grand total abouts with the insurance and all the equipment i would need? Thanks! :)

depends on what equipment if any you already have -
for doing the landscape design portion - it won't cost much -
at all
for the lawn care - if you want to start with good equipment -
you'll need at least one walk behind mower, and a good tight radius mower - figure about $6000 - $8000
a trailer - $2000 ?
Pickup truck - used/new???
tools - rakes, shovels, etc..... $300- $400
chain saw - $300
trimmers- $250 ea

for the deck building - unless you want to dig footings by hand
figure on either renting a power auger for each job - or buying one - if you buy probably around $1200

then saws, hammers (manual - pneumatic??) levels , compressor, generator- etc...
$300 - $4000 depending on how much you buy

and you better have some operating cash as well -
at least $2000-$3000

for your lawn cutting business - you should get paid weekly - or try to set up contracts where they give you a downpayment at the begining of the year - and then pay you monthly

on your landscaping business - they should pay you something for the design - if they give you the landscaping job tell them you'll deduct the design fee off the cost of the landscaping job - for the landscaping you should get
1/3 up front - 1/3 after all the beds are prepped/top soil in and shrubs delivered - and then 1/3 when you complete

same holds true for your deck jobs - 1/3 up front - 1/3 when materials get delivered - 1/3 when complete

  • Sprucing Up Home#39;s Curb Appeal Can Help To Sell In Tight Market ...

&Ldquo;Even as warm weather gives way to the fall season, homeowners can do many things to improve a home’s curb appeal when preparing to sell,” advises Gail Tunis, head of Garden Maintenance for award-winning Borst Landscape & Design in Allendale, N.J. “It’s a buyer’s market right now so it’s important to bolster that first impression.” Tunis suggests that if your house has been sitting on the market for a while, a great way to attract potential buyers is by making your property stand out. One way to do that, according to Tunis, is with color. The garden designer is responsible for the design, installation and upkeep of all annual and perennial gardens on more than 80 properties maintained by Borst, and she supervises seasonal and holiday displays. But when a home is up for sale, the entire property becomes a display that must be designed with utmost care. “The eye is always drawn to color,” said Tunis. “We have several clients...

OK, you get up check your flowers and vegetable and wow where did these holes come from? You don’t see any bugs around. Chances are they have been eaten by slugs or earwigs.

Slugs and Earwigs are probably the most persistent and most common garden pests. In large numbers, they can wreak havoc to an entire planting bed or garden. Problem is, they are night marauders and you will need to go out in the evening with a flashlight, say around 10:00PM, to find them. Now, how do you get rid of them?

Slugs normally eat broad leaf plants like marigolds, petunias, salvia and will also eat vegetables like eggplant, zucchini, kale, chard, and also lettuce I found this year. The unusual amount of wet rainy weather this year has made my gardens open territory for a feeding frenzy. I seemed to have found quite a few different varieties as a result of this rainy summer in all sizes from the very tiny hard to see ones on my lettuces (need to wear my glasses), to the super massive ones that I refuse to touch without some kind of glove. Did you know that there are 40 different species of slugs in the United States alone? With some in the Northwest growing to 8 inches and up to 18 inches? Wow, thought you might want to know this. The most common garden slug in the New England area is about one inch long, thank God…
