What schooling/experience is needed for a landscape design job?
Twisted Circle Flash Animation

From no schooling to advanced degrees, most states have plenty of two year programs that will get you into landscape design. A smaller number of programs exist for landscape architecture, I know the Uof MN has one.

With no schooling you are limited by your personal experience and what you can learn from others and truely have to sell yourself and your designs to get established.

is landscape design a job to success?
Pienza da lungi - Pienza from afar

i love plants and learning about them. this is why i would like to do landscaping.

Like any career, it can be if you're good, and people talk about your work. At the very least, it's a good living. "Successful" can be in the eye of the beholder. If you're paying all your bills, and you hum while you work, I would call that success.

If you love it, do it. Being happy in your work is its own reward.

Will a diploma from Ashworth College's online program in Landscape Design get me into a job in the field?

I've been thinking seriously for a while now about taking classes, or working toward a degree, in Landscape or Garden Design. I found this one, which suits my budget and current time limitations (just had a baby) but don't want to do it if it'll only get me laughed at when I start looking for work in the field. I'd be happy starting out anywhere from a garden supply store/greenhouse/nursery, or at a landscape design company.

Actually your last statement is what you need to do. Just go get a job at a nursery and go from there. Landscape design is not something you can learn online. Sure the online courses can help but I think it may be a waste of money. If you have a community college near you that would be a much better choice. The art of landscape design cannot be learned in books it must be learned in the field. So get a job first then work with them in the field and the whole time learn about the plants and techniques. Then if you want go to a local community college and take some courses in horticulture or agronomy. Then lastly you may want to read these reports about ashworth. Good luck to you in your future of landscapes.

how would I find a job for landscaping design/architect after college?

I have a recipe for success when it comes to job hunting. No matter what your skills, or how nice your resume is, you will not get a job if you do not get an interview.

I recommend blitzing all the landscape architects that you would like to work with and customize a cover letter for each of them. Mail all of these at one time. You can find them in the phone book and on the internet if you do not know them already. The theory is that the best firms do not go looking for their employees in the newspaper or on monster. The best companies may place their positions on their website or hire head hunters. Of course there's no sense in putting all your eggs in one basket. I recommend a second mailing to include all the rest of the potential employers about two weeks after the first. This way you give yourself the best chance of getting the job you want before having to decide on whatever might just be available.

Always take time to evaluate a job offer. A few days to a week is usually acceptable. If you want to take more than a few days always send a thank you card or letter for the opportunity to interview. This is especially important if a decision on an offer is pending on their part. With this econonmy landscape design often gets cut from construction budgets first. Be wary of offers that come too quickly. Companies that burn out employees and those who hire and then fire as needed are often the ones who make the quick offers. Make sure to get an opportunity to see the office and meet the other employees before you accept. This way you get to look at how many emplyees there are and what there attitude seems to be working there.

Finally for Landscape Architecture look to large civil engineering firms. They often have a landscape architecture component as well. Even if they do not have that kind of staff already, it doesn't mean you will not be the first one.

I would also recommend that if possible get a part time job with a landscape architect before graduation. If the market is competitive for new hires than this is an easier way to get the job. having a seat in the office already goes a lot further toward full time employment than the person who is just getting a foot in the door after graduation.

Good luck.

Career in Landscape Design?

I am thinking about enrolling at my local community college (Columbus State) and pursuing a degree in Landscape Design. Does anyone know what to expect out of this career?(What is the work like, What is the pay like, How hard is it to find a job, etc.)?

It's dirty work in hot conditions with a pay that might be good might be bad. It depends on the job.

  • Is Starting Up a Landscape Design Business Easy?

Currently, in United States, more than 26% of licensed landscape architects are self employed. Most of the public thought that setting up a landscape design business is an easy task. In their point of view, this career is rewarding and lucrative. However, setting up this business is not an easy task.

In fact, getting involved in landscape architecture business is challenging. As a newcomer in this line, after you have gained the license, you need to get yourself prepared with a certain amount of start up cost to invest in purchasing new computer as well as the computer-aided design (CAD) software. You need to familiarize yourself with the applications of word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and CAD. All these applications are essential for you to develop impressive presentations to obtain new businesses.     Besides, at the initial stage, you may need to struggle to build your client base.  It is indeed important for you to have good marketing skills to promote your services to the community. What you need to do is to allocate some money as your monthly operating costs. This is because you have to anticipate that you may not have any business for the first few months.
