I bought a house that hasn't had any landscaping done to it at all. Unless you count overgrown bushes, weeds, and the neighbors bushes encroaching in my yard. I want to get a flower garden started next spring.

I have a guy who will cut the bushes and weeds for me. He could do tilling if I need it or i can. But it's the garden design I need help with. I'm not sure what flowers and plants would work best in my yard and I'm not that good at color design and design ideas. But I don't necessarily need someone to do all the planting for me.

I just need to know What to plant Where and When. Like a "Paint-By-Numbers" design for my garden.

Is this the type of service a landscape designer would do? Or a landscape service? If not them, then who would be able to do something like this? And how much done something like that cost (ballpark)?

I'd appreciate information from other gardeners and especially people who work in the landscape business.

P.S. Please don't suggest I buy a bunch of garden books. I have a bunch. I still can't decide where to begin.

Hello.I would go with the Designer as opposed to an Architect,The fee would be a lot less.I fell that an Architect has the education of book smarts,where as most Designers will have the actual field knowledge.I have worked in the Landscape Irrigation Service for 32 years,and I have only seen a very few Architects that actually have a clue on well designed Landscapes.

I think that you do have the ability to design this your self though.Just in your every day travels,to the store to work walks in your neighborhood,take mental notes of the plantings,trees,flowers,the flow of the plant beds.Take your digital camera along to take photos,this can be very helpful to go back and view the images.

Pay close attention to what plants look and grow well in your area.And if you happen across a landscape with plantings you like,don't hesitate to ask questions if the home owner is around.I have learned over the many years working in Landscapes that most people have a good eye in what looks good.

The fee could be from a few hundred dollars and up.

I have a landscape design service and it seems that my advertising dollars were flushed down the toilet in the yellow phone book. I do landscape design for homeowners and also take commercial customers if they call. I am willing to spend the money but I don't want to waste more money. What advertising actually works for businesses like mine?

1) A sound professional strategically designed and marketed website.

2) Ask owners if you can leave behind a sign in their yard for a limited time after you complete the project.

3)Pay per Click advertising on the internet, they are not evil if done correctly.

4)Direct Mail at targeted homes at specific times of year (when people are thinking about their yards)

There are several other methods depending on budget and the area your business is in. But yes, reduce your yellow page ad asap.

We are expert landscape contractors and want to become Green Roof Top plant installers. We have over 26 years in Landscape Design/Build construction. We've done Rooftop work before of various types, not Green Rooftop installs. Who and How can we get going with this in a big way. Tim

I would like to move my company in that direction too. You need to have an architect on staff or as a consultant. Green roofs weigh more then the average roof and an installation will need to have structural reinforcements and a top-of-the-line drainage system.

Unfortunately our country still thinks green roofs are a leaky liability. Many insurance companies will drop a homeowners insurance due to a green roof and your liability insurance is going to spike as well.

Getting started is going to be all about advertising. You will need to get a massive campaign going so that people know who you are AND so you can educate the public about green roof misconceptions. Put a green roof on your own home so you can practice, use it in advertising, and take advantage of the tax write-off.

Hopefully your company is a green one, since that is your target market and you can make potential customers feel good about the Earth friendly products you provide. This will help your word-of-mouth tremendously.

I've also bee thinking about getting into grey-water irrigation. This would be the same target market.

Hows everyone doing. Im planning to create a landscaping dvd for people who don’t have the money to pay for a company who offers services like mine, so they can do the work them selves. i do landscaping for a living, not just mowing lawns, I do all the fancy pavers, retainers, sod, etc. therefore there would be different sections or chapters, call it what you want, on this dvd. Would anyone be able to refer a few companies that would be able to create this dvd and package it if I provided the video?

That’s a great idea, I know we paid a ton of money for our driveway to get pavers. I work for an independent film producer, and we have used SFVideo (sfvideo.com) for the past couple projects and have been extremely pleased with the overall quality.
