We are in the process of renovating our flower beds and looking for something that isn't typically thought of as a landscape edge. We want something that is inexpensive and readily available. Does anyone have an unusual or unique idea?
For my side of the house flower garden..I went down to the river and collected same size and color rocks . They were about 8 to ten inches long. I put them down side by side then added a second layer just like you would in making a brick wall. best part is...they were free and only took my time to make it look pretty.

Many of the playground companies make edging for playgrounds that is safe. Check with them. See Landscape Structures, Gametime, Kompan, Miracle, PlayWorld. Many of thse manufacturers have ADA and safe edges for playgrounds. You can also look at landscape edge materials. They manke a black, plastic landscape edge that might work for you also. Home Depot or Lowes might help you find that or a local nursery might carry it.
I have a circle driveway (OSB rocks). I am wanting to do some kind of landscape (flower bed) in the circle part of the driveway. My question is what would be good to use as edging/border to separate the mulch and the driveway? I have considered Monkey Grass (Liriope) but have found it to be pretty expensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Liriope is a great edger, and yes, it can be expensive. But I have found that if you look for the larger pots, initially more expensive than the little 4" pots, you can divide them and get a lot more plants for your money. Sometimes you can also buy them by the flat, in what they call starter plugs, with a lot of small plants for the cost of one or two bigger ones. They do grow very quickly.
These are not going to be available at a big box garden center, you will have to go to a nursery, and perhaps you can get them ordered for you.
Landscape roses are very pretty, but they do have thorns where people are getting out of their cars, and they will cost a lot more than liriope, which is evergreen, stays where you put it pretty much, doesn't get out of hand or need drastic pruning, and does not need a whole lot of maintainence.
The best way is with a diamond blade water cooled cut off saw you can rent. Second is if you have an old saw, you can get a masonry blade. Be sure to wear a dust mask, the dust is harmful to your lungs.
I am going to be edging new landscaping and I was wondering if people would reccomend going with Aluminum edging or the composite edging. Which would is reccomend and what are the pros and cons of each?
Thank you for your help,
Adam
I prefer aluminum edging for several reasons. The biggest is cost. Aluminum withstands the test of time so you will not have to replace it. Wood rots and breaks up, steel rusts, and the vinyl gets hard and breaks or cracks. I have a lot of vinyl right now but will be changing it all out over the summer.
Landscape Edging Ideas | Home and Gardening
There are many beautiful ways to add some finishing touches to your landscaping and gardening projects, and putting in landscape edging is just one way to give your yard a finished, polished, and professional look. So let’s review some great landscape edging ideas that are simple and easy to put into place almost anywhere.
1. Wood Landscape Edging Ideas – There are a variety of wooden landscape edgings that can be purchased at any home and garden store, hardware store, or regular discount stores such as Walmart or Kmart too. You can buy standard two by four or six by four wood pieces and cut them to size, or buy small round pieces of wood which look like miniature tree trunks.
When using wood landscape edging, make it decorative by varying the heights and sizes of wood pieces. If for instance, you’re using the round wood pieces, put a 6 inch one in place, then a 4 inch high piece next to that, then a 2 inch high piece, then another 4 inch piece, then another 6 inch piece. Repeat this pattern around the edge of your landscaped areas.

Landscape edging comes in various types and anyone can decide based upon their needs and budget. There are assortments of edging materials that a person can pick from.
The main difference between each edging material is the cost and time to install.Concrete, stone or brick pavers can be used as garden edging. They are accessible in an ample variety of colors, shapes and patterns, thus provides a complimentary decorative element to most garden themes.
By using lower level materials, such as flat pavers and sandstone pieces, to mark out your garden beds and allowing the plants contained within the beds to grow over your edging you can achieve a relaxed but elegant look .
Perhaps the least classy edging products are the thin plastic ones that have a rounded top. Thin edging material comes in handy if your path and drive are curved. These materials bend around very tight radius curves. Other popular types include bricking, decorative iron boarders, using other plants to form a mini hedge-like edge and cutting away a small clearing between the lawn and beds. The metal, wood and plastic materials might satisfy your earth-friendly requirement as they could be made from recycled materials.
