water garden landscaping

I'm looking for a way to water my roses without having to stand there holding a hose.?

I live in Minnesota so July gets very hot with very little rain. I have heard about some people poking holes in garden hoses to water their landscaping plants and I think that sounds like a good idea. I just want to know if anyone has done it and if it worked well. I don't really want to spend even that little bit of money for something that doesn't work.

Get a five-gallon bucket (like a paint or drywall bucket), and drill a small hole (1/4" or so) in the bottom. You can do this with it plugged or not, but fill the bucket with the hose, and then let the water slowly run out the hole and soak the roots of your plants.

Water Garden Landscaping

University of Illinois Extension horiticulturist Jeff Rugg discusses some of the basics of water garden landscaping.

underground water in my garden?

Hi, we have just had our garden landscaped and a small area of ground which is surrounded by slabs to put plants in is very boggy, so much so we can sink a foot into the soil. We dug down and have found 2 small areas close to each other that fill with water which is oblivously why the soil is so boggy. There are no water pipes in the immediate area and the house was built 30 years ago on farmland. Anyone have any ideas where the water is coming from amd how to rectify the problem. Is it a natural source of water or a serious problem. Only constructive suggestions only please, thanks
we keep emptying the water but it just trickles back in the holes again. there are no septic tanks nearby thank goodness.

try pulling all the water out and follow the water flow
good luck

What is the best landscape for a barrier island?

I live on a barrier island in New Jersey and have always had a problem with people having lawns and the water they used to keep them lush and green. I've always been a proponent of a low water garden or stones to landscape a home. Someone told me that even with the water usage a lawn is better because it helps keep his home cooler and thus reduces his energy use for air conditioning his home. Does this make sense, have I been wrong all these years? He claimed that stones, mulch or sand would store heat throughout the day.

I would think that the heat stored would be negligible. You will need to contact your island authority before planting this, but I would plant sea-oats or sea-grass. It is everywhere here in the Gulf of Mexico, and may do damage to the ecosystem if it is not native to New Jersey. But, if it is not, then I would find an unpopulated portion of an island in the region, and see what is native there.

Sea-oats can thrive in sandy environments and do not require high maintenance. But again, I would check with an authority to see what they would allow on the island.

Plumbing cost question - can you give me an idea what a plumber would charge?

I need to run a residential water line from the meter at the street, about fifteen feet underground, then up to a height of about three feet above ground, where there needs to be a high-quality brass valve to accept a garden hose. Not sure if I need a pressure reduction valve also, but I will assume yes. This will be a watering station for a landscaping / garden area. Any rough idea about what a job like this might cost to have done?

This is a rough, worst case estimate. Work to be done by a professional plumber M-F, 8:00 - 4:00.

Trip charge & estimating, $100.00.

You will only need a psi reducing valve if pressure exceeds 80psi. They cost about $125.00 + $50.00 to install.

You will also need a backflow preventer. Add another $100.00 + $50.00 to install.

You need a stand pipe, add $50.00 + $50.00 to install.

You need 15ft of pipe run, not 15 feet deep I am assuming?

Figure labor to be $2.50/ft + $50.00 materials.

Are you connecting to an existing line, to an extra meter or a re-claim meter? Add $50.00 to connect to the meter.

You must also figure in the cost to pull a permit, inspection & call in locates before digging. Add $150.00 or more, depends on plumber.

The contractor will likely use an excavator, add $250.00 excavator charge.

Add all of the above, add 10% fudge factor in case I missed something + tax and that may give you a rough idea.

Does water replace dirt at a baptism?

I hear all the time how baptism symbolizes burial and resurrection. Is baptism just acting out a physical burial? Water beats dirt, I suppose. Bring your own headstone...

BTW Y!A wanted to post this in "Garden and Landscape." I guess I'm not surprised.

God must have a sense f humor,...He has to to have servants like you!LOL.

John baptized people as a sign that they had asked God to forgive their sins and had decided to live as he wanted them to live. Baptism was an outward sign of commitment. To be effective, it had to be accompanied by in inward change of attitude leading to a changed life--- the work of the Holy Spirit( in essence to washing the "dirt"out of ones grubby little heart, with "water" LOL).

ยป Energy Efficient Windows Effect On Your Landscaping @ Green ...

Energy Efficient windows may be a great savings inside the home, but their effect on your landscaping can cause you just the opposite situation, as magnified rays are reflected from your windows directly onto vulnerable leaf tissue.

For several years I have observed the damage in turf grass and garden plants caused by the radiant heating that comes off of new energy efficient windows. In areas exposed to full summer sun for more than 8 hours a day, I have measured temperatures up to and exceeding 160 degrees beamed directly onto plant material. Plants that normally seem healthy fall through spring will begin to show leaf scorch, and die back to the ground. Areas around your house that were lush and green prior to your window installation now look dry and damaged through the hottest summer weather.

How To Discover If Damage Is Due To Energy Efficient Windows:

Water Fountain Pumps โ€“ An Essential Part of Garden Landscaping

Gardens are lovely places to relax in. They allow you a break from all the busy cityscapes that most of us are surrounded with. Gardens also bring a touch of nature into our homes. Speaking of nature, it would not be complete without any body of water.

Water fountains are very appealing in any garden setting. When it’s hot outside and you’re tired, you’ll feel instantly refreshed when you see a lively fountain in a garden. The sound that a water fountain produces is also very soothing.

If you live in an apartment, you might want to choose a small table top fountain for the soothing sounds it will produce. If you have a house with a yard, you can go as large as you want for your water fountain. No matter the size, the water fountain will produce soothing sounds.

We know that at the bottom of every water fountain sits a water fountain pump. This is, of course, the core of the fountain. If you didn’t have a water fountain pump you wouldn’t have moving water!
