I recently picked up a set of low voltage outdoor lighting at a yard sale. The total watts for the lights equals 66 watts. The transformer is 44 watts. Will this set up work? And if so what are the consequences of using an undersized transformer.
Thanks
If the transformer has a fuse it will blow and if it doesn't then the transformer eventually burn out.

I just installed a new switch (provides power to the landscaping lights) & receptacles. Tapped off of an extra circuit from the basement. I connected the Hot & Neutral wires to one side of the receptacle, and ran Hot/Neutral from the other side of the receptacle to the switch (Hot - On/ Neutral - Off terminals). I also connected the Black/White wires from the outdoor lighting transformer with the same Hot/Neutral wires on the switch.
When the switch is in the ON position, & the Circuit Breaker is turned ON - All is good. Light work. Receptacle works. However, when I turn OFF the light switch & then turn it back ON, it trips the circuit breaker ever time ?? What did I do wrong ??
Any advise would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks.

JN Thanks for the input. I have the ground wire coming from the ROMEX connected to both the Switch & the Receptacle. S/B Grounded.
Okay, I Think you ran the wires wrong, but it is hard to tell by your description.
Black=Hot
White=Neutral.
Run white from existing circuit to lights with no breaks/interruptions.
Run black wire to switch. cut, wire one end to each screw on the switch.

You can't have both black and white wires connected to a switch. It sounds like you wired the blacks together and then wired both black and white to the switch on the off side. when you switch it off, you are throwing black and white together.

I use several of these Malibu 120v to 12v transformrs to light my yard. But I am having a difficult time figuring out what they are costing me. My transformers are for outdoor use, but I thought a while back people were putting in low voltage interior can lights because they were in the long run cheaper to run? I want to calculate what each Malibu costs me per month.
300 watts, times the hours they run per day, times 30 days, divided by 1000, times the cost per kilowatt hour your power company charges. 8 to 18 cents depending where you are.
300x12x30 \ 1000 = 108 KWH x .10 = $10.80 per month
Just installed a 600 watt Ryco Engineering landscape lighting transformer a week ago. Worked fine until today. The digital display on the unit turns on and functions as normal, however I am measuring 0 voltage on every setting. The breakers are not tripped and the wiring looks fine. Unit looks fine and does not smell burnt. Is there anything I could be missing on trouble shooting this? I would hate to have to replace it after only a week.
It sounds like a bad connection. Take your tickler and check the input voltage. Is there a thermal switch? Lots of times a non-professional will not make a solid connection. It could also be cross wired, they will work for a while sometimes that way. Black or red to hot, white to neutral.

How To Install Landscape Lighting | Outdoor Lighting Authority
Landscape lighting is a simple way to extend the length of time you can enjoy your outdoor spaces. This can be achieved several ways. Pathways, steps, trees, garden features, architectural elements, waterscapes, and decks call all be enhanced through landscape lighting. Low-voltage lighting is easy and, because it only requires 12 volts of electricity to operate, is safe for the do-it-yourselfer to install. For our purposes we will discuss the most common form of low-voltage lighting which is pathway lighting.
Landscape lighting consists of three main components: light fixtures, a transformer, and low-voltage electrical cable. The transformer must be plugged into an outdoor GFCI outlet fitted with a “while-in-use” cover. This cover is an oversized plastic box that covers the outlet and has a notch for the power cord to go through. These are inexpensive, easy to install, and can be obtained from your local hardware store. The transformer allows you to step down the 120 volt electricity to a safe, usable 12 volt system that we will be using.
