Does anyone know how to remove oxidation from exterior lighting fixtures?
Sky

I installed all new low voltage exterior landscape lighting three years ago. The fixtures now have fairly noticable oxidation. I believe that they are powder coated cast aluminum. I have 20 path lights, a large five lamp pole fixture, and several floods that all have the same problem.

I invested a fairly substansial amount of time and money in this lighting and I would like to find some way to remove the oxidation without having to replace all of the lights.

You can use car polish to remove the oxidation and restore the original color but to be honest, that is what Al does. If you clean it all up, in 3 years it will oxidize again. It's the exposure to ultraviolet radiation that is the culprit.

what kind of designer/business to see k to remodel exterior of home?
BW Sky

I would like to change the exterior of my home including some structure to update it, paint, and addition of entry gates, doors, stucco, etc...as well as lighting and landscaping to tie in the whole look. What kind of person does it all? A landscape architect, interior designer, exterior architect? I need someone to design and draw plans and do it all instead of getting a bunch of different contractors.

Hi Domma,

It may be a bit difficult to find a contractor who specailizes in each of these. I would recommend getting a few free quotes to help assist with your decision...you may end up with more than one contractor and a lower price! http://www.elyfe.com/remodeling.html

I just bought a house built in 1949?
_DSC2848

We are redecorating our newly purchased house. It was built in 1949. I am looking for websites to check and keep the new landscape, lights and fixtures for the exterior within the time period. Does anyone have any suggestions for websites for period remodeling?

Thank you sooooo much for your time.
Tiffany
I believe it is a Craftsman style house

You did not mention the style of the house. lol Is it a Craftsman, Tudor, Victorian, Country, New England what??? Hard to give ideas with just dozens of styles of homes or even a website. lol

ADDITIONAL:
Now that you have added Craftsman.....Just type in Craftsman house in Google. The Crastman houses were built during the Arts and Crafts Era in American and the furniture etc. was designed by Gustav Stickley. Look him up to and you will get plenty of ideas. Tiffany was also designing in this era.

When will be a good time to sell my home and what projects should I put money into while I'm still in it?
_DSC2860

I bought my first home on October 31, 2006. It is a good starter home but I'm not crazy about the neighborhood/area and I want to plan on moving within the next year or so. I can qualify now for a much nicer home and I'm sure I will be able to qualify for even more within the next year.

There are many things I would like to do with the home while I am in it but I don't want to put too much money into it because I worry that I won't get the same amount in return due to the neighborhood. The things I am sure that need to be done are painting the entire house and new carpet in some rooms. I would like new light fixtures (the existing ones are brass) and things like that but don't want to spend money where it is not needed. I plan on doing some landscaping to make the exterior look more presentable.

I would just like to know what projects I should invest money in and what projects I can go without doing to make the home presentable to sell without putting too much money into it.

The timing is important. Watch the market. As far as what to do, I suggest only paint and minor fix up. Also, repair anything that is not working. Otherwise, spend as little as possible.

Question about rehabing a home.?
_DSC2805

I am looking at this home that is stripped down to the frame inside. Exterior is complete (roof, windows, paint, landscape). Needs everything inside except frame work. I'm talking wiring needs a new circuit breaker box, plumbing, flooring installation, dry wall, all appliances, all fixtures, all duct work needs to be installed plus heater, ac, water heater, lighting sockets installed I mean EVERYTHING. Plus some of the walls have cracks in them so i'm worried that might be an issue. I heard 30k to fix all this does that sound right or am I looking like more towards 50k. It's a 3500 sq ft 2 story home with basement and attic built in 1901.

Thanks
this will be contracted out as I have zero experience in this

I'd look more towards 50k. Hard to say without seeing it firsthand, but what you describe is basically a total teardown. You might spend 10k just fixing the kitchen, and another 10k for the two bathrooms. Add 7-10k for all new wiring, 5k for plumbing, etc, etc, etc. A foundation rehab might cost 20k by itself, depending on the issues involved. Might just cost 5k, who knows until you get an estimate. I'm beginning to think 50k is your low side and 70k is the high side.

EDIT: If you have zero experience in this, you're in the wrong business. A contractor can tell you anything and you can't dispute it, because you don't know what the hell he's talking about. A softening market and no experience, coupled with a leveraged position equals big trouble. You might make a couple of bucks off this deal and the next one, but eventually you will lose it all to the bank. If you can't afford to pay cash for the property, you can't afford to flip it. Stick with what you know if you want to make money.

3 Great Reasons to Shop for Home Lighting Online - home blog

If you are a consumer who knows just what brand or style of lighting fixtures you are looking to buy, the internet can save you money. Conversely, if you are just learning about what lighting fixtures, interior and exterior, are available for your home, the internet is a great place to get educated.

To begin with, here are several types of interior fixtures available for your home: sconces, chandeliers, table and floor lamps, pendants, ceiling mounts, track lighting, recessed lighting and bathroom fixtures. Exterior fixtures include: landscape lighting, exterior sconces, exterior pendants, exterior ceiling fixtures, post lanterns, and flood lights. Take a look at the best ways to find these fixtures online; no matter what stage of the search for home lighting you're in, the internet is a valuable resource. You Don't Need to be a Lighting Expert

You don't need to be a lighting expert to shop by style: all you have to do is find a fixture that matches your home décor. If, for example, you are looking for a chandelier to hang over the dining table of your farmhouse, a rustic chandelier would be a good style choice. A well organized website should be intuitive and easy to navigate. Look for online lighting stores that begin with the type of fixture you are looking to buy: chandeliers, wall sconces, exterior fixtures. From there, the site should take you to a selection of lighting styles: Rustic, Traditional, Contemporary etc. see: http://www.chandeliers-and-home-lighting.com/wrought-iron-chandel ier.htm Once you've decided on a lighting style, you should then be able to customize your search for details such as: price, brand, size and finish. This is also a great way to educate yourself. Take advantage of the many thousands of photographed fixtures and information such as lamp fixture size, finish, price and brand.
