I've had a Home Staging company ask if we would set up lighting in the fronts of homes for customers who are selling their homes. I was wondering if the realty community had any opinions on the value of quality landscape lighting. I'm not talking the store bought cheap fixtures - either solar or plastic light kits, but metal low voltage lights for the sidewalks, lighting for pillars and brick/stone face, along with any trees etc.

I am not a realtor but have bought and sold multiple homes. It doesn't really add much to me. I think the money could be spend better else where.

I had the inexpensive light sets you can buy at the home improvement stores and even the solar lights (they break easily and you can't get parts). But they don't look as good as some of the systems I've seen. I'm looking for quality landscape lighting that makes my house and landscape look good. Any suggestions?

Focus lighting makes some really cool landscape lights. Look them up on the web.

My husband installed our lighting and ever since it will shut off after a while. Then about 5 minutes goes by and it will turn back on. I'm handier than my husband and would like to fix the problem, but he threw away the packaging. BTW-The timer is set correctly.

The transformer is overheating. Most of the transformers have a safety switch that turns them off if they get hot.

A few common causes:

1) too much wattage/too many lights for the transformer. If everything came in one kit, this is probably not the problem. Otherwise, you need to find a copy of the instructions online and see what your transformer can handle.

2) Wire is to small for the length of the run. Again not a likely problem if this is one kit. Check the instructions for this one as well.

3) A short in the system somewhere. If the wire connects to the transformer with screw terminals, make sure that there aren't any stray wires touching both terminals. Check for bad connections along the run. If one of the connections was put on, then taken off and repositioned you can get a short in the original location sometimes.

4) A bad fixture. If all else fails, try removing one at a time and see if the problem goes away.

I plan on installing fixtures to the left and right of the transformer, as a result it will be a long run or wire. Would it be benificial to divide the run in half and can the wire for both runs be attached to the one set of terminals?

On average you can go about 1 watt for every foot of wire ( #12) so if you have two 50 watt lights you dont want to go more then a 100 feet with one wire and it is no problem to put as many wires as you want on the transformer as long as it stays on or below the transformers wattage
