I have already purchased my new lights but just today learned about the voltage variance (what I have now is 120V, need to move to low voltage). I'd like to use the existing underground wiring for the new lights, if this is possible. Can a layman easily install a transformer on the existing line and plug the new low volt lights into the heavy power cable already in place? ...or is this too much of a job to bite off for a guy juggling overcommitted weekend schedules and soccer coaching?

Not at all, those lights are pretty much available anywhere, get them at Lowes and Home Depot.
The come with a transformer, that you plug into a regular 120 volt outlet. Then you just lay out the lights, they usually come in either four or six packets, some contain more. Then you, use the wiring wire that comes with the kit, and lay it where you wish the lights to go. Then you simply assemble the lights, all snap in parts, and attach a press in connector to the wire you laid out. That's it, usually comes with a timer too.
All the instructions are in the kit.

Are there cost savings to doing both irrigation and lighting with the same company? What are the pros and cons?

If they are capable of doing both the advantages are that they can use the same conduit and will save you time in getting your trench refilled and your yard back.
They should be able to provide the service cheaper than if you did them seperately but it never hurts to ask.
The con is that they may be specialists in lighting but have no clue in regards to irrigation.

Electrical line is already available so what are pros and cons other than ease of installation for solar-powered? This is for a walkway from our driveway to front steps.
Also, how about low-voltage vs normal voltage?

To answer your question properly, one would need to know why you are wanting landscape lights & the location of those lights.

Most people only want a decorative effect & therefore don't need full-blown hard-wired lights. Good quality solars will be fine for them.

She's got a GREAT resume - Wash Post, NY Times, NBC...can you say "Bleedin' heart liberal shill for the left , especially Obama?" Another crony of the MSM - gets kudos & accolades for stating what they all want to hear. I particularly like this little gem from the Post: "Democratic partisans were delighted with her because she was seen as being "snippy" to Cheney."
