what is a garden style apartment?
Forest Boulevard

can someone please tell what a garden style apartment is, me and my DH are looking to move into one but im not sure what the heck it is.

Garden style apartments refers to a large development of small apartment buildings. Each building is perhaps two to four stories tall, and there are no internal hallways, although adjacent apartments may share a wall. You enter your apartment from a common stairwell or patio, and the buildings are typically surrounded by outdoor landscaping or patios.

Do you know of any tropical gardening resources?
Cypress Bonsai Tree 2

I am looking for information regarding the background and origins of the "tropical gardening" style for a garden design course that I am doing. There is a lot of information available regarding Zen Gardens, English Country Gardens, Cottage Gardens, etc but very little about the background and history of tropical gardens. Can anyone suggest any helpful resources that could assist me with finding answers? Thanks in advance!

The Tropical Garden by William Warren, Luca Invernizzi Tettoni (Photographer), opens with an essay tracing the historical interest in tropical plants. Royal and religious, private and public tropical gardens are discussed:

Daniel Headrick, “Botany, Chemistry, and Tropical Development,” Journal of World History notes that the growing demand of Western consumers and industries for tropical products... helped spur relations between the North Atlantic countries and the tropics in the century before 1914.

Tropical Garden Design, by Made Wijayahas includes a history of tropical colonial gardens:

" Tropical gardens can contain a wide variety of plants, but some require lots of heat while others require lots of water. Tropical gardens also don't often survive freezing temperatures either, so many people in cooler climates choose to create tropical container gardens which can be taken inside when bitter cold winter temperatures come around.

Most tropical plants require a lot of sunlight though, so if you're planting them into a ground based garden or raised garden bed, be sure to choose the sunniest spot you can find in your yard. You'll want to plant tropical plants and flowers in areas which get a minimum of six hours direct sunlight each day. Some tropical garden plants such as bougainvillea, thrive on irregular watering patterns"

Esperanza and Spanish Broom are excellent plants to put into a tropical garden, which are both heat and drought tolerant. These plants produce bright showy yellow flowers that bloom continuously from spring through fall.

Use plants that give you a lush tropical feel, like palms, ferns and elephant ears, but also use water features, such as a fountain, waterfall, pond or stream:

Many plants grown as houseplants, such as cactus & Agave, thrive outside in a semi-arid tropical environment. "In regions where the heat of the growing season is followed by frost or freezing temperatures, tropical plants are often dug up and overwintered, used as houseplants, or simply repurchased for use the next growing season."

Has anyone ever grown a pioneer style garden?
English Field Maple Bonsai Tree (Acer campestre) in Spring Foliage

I went to a festival at Davy Crockett's birthplace and saw a period authentic garden. It was beautiful. Does anyone have any experience doing this or know of any good sites for information? I am interested in doing a pioneer style garden, so any advice would be appreciated.
I agree something is better than nothing . Thank you!

You could call my gardens 'pioneer'. Think what a beautiful English country cottage garden would look like after the gardener had been dead for couple of months! lol. Seriously, I've been gathering authentic pioneer plants here in the Dakotas for years. My sources have been graveyards (I only take cuttings, seeds or seedlings), old homestead sites and living relatives of old homesteaders themselves. My collection includes a dozen old world roses, peonies, irises, hollyhocks, lilies, Chinese lantern, Bouncing Bet, bluebells, lilacs, hollyhocks, irises, rhubarb, raspberries, horseradish, asparagus, various herbs, loosestrife and many non-native trees and shrubs. I've always had great respect for pioneer women who would take the time in there harsh existence to bring a little beauty to it. RScott

10 points for the best garden style bedroom!?
Bonsai Tree - Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum "Deshojo") Front View

I am decorating my bedroom garden style. I need ideas for it. I was thinking window boxes on the end of the bed. I've seen great garden wall murals, but I don't want to permanently mark my walls. I want as many ideas as you have or answers will allow you to give. I love long answers!

  • Friendly Neighbors – Gardening in Style

Gardeners growing vegetables find that companion planting provides many benefits, one of which is protection from garden pests . A major enemy of the carrot is the carrot fly, whereas the leek suffers from the onion fly and leek moth. Yet when leek and carrot live together in companionship, the strong and strangely different smell of the partner plant repels the insects so much that they do not even attempt to lay their eggs on the neighbor plant. They take off speedily to get away from the smell. This is why mixed plantings give better insect control than mono-culture, where many plants of the same type are planted together in row after row. Even when plants are affected by plant diseases, a mixed plant culture can usually alleviate the situation.

It is important to remember that not all “protective” botanicals act quickly. For example, marigolds, to be effective in nematode control, should be grown over at least one full season, and more is better, for their effect is cumulative. One should also realize that certain companion plants will diminish each others natural repelling ability as they grow together.  The effects of plants on one another are important outside the vegetable garden, among trees and shrubs as well as grains, grasses, and field crops.
