Radio shack sells packs of LEDs, but how do I make them light up? I don't know much about electronics. Learned right away that they aren't like light-bulbs that light up by going directly from a battery to the bulb.

i agree with botoboto buying a string of pre-made christmas lights will be much easier, if you are interested in understanding electronics grab a introductory book and work your way up this will save you lots of money by avoiding big mistakes

They change color from green to yellow to red or something like that. When you stare and blink at the lights, if it is green, you can see red when you blink. How do they work? The lights have a little box attached by the plug-in.

Yes there is a Green and Red Led inside "EACH" Bulb....

But did you notice there isn't a separate wire for Each bulb???
Here's how they make Different Colors.....

They flip the Positive and Negative polarity back and forth on the wire....That little box does the flipping....

So if one wire is positive....IT's Red.
Then that same wire is negative...It's Green..
If they split the time evenly then IT LOOKS YELLOW!

But they gotta flash it back and forth for yellow to appear...over 25 times a second minimum....otherwise you'll see flicker...

Faster makes flicker disappear.....That's the box's job (it's a microprocessor)

When you "Blink" at the lights....guess what....you're "capturing a short "slice" of color....that color can be Red.....or it can be Green....

If you do the eye-blink trick with a fan....the blades can seem to stop...

Do these exist? I don't have a power source even remotely near the 2 small trees that i'd like to light up this summer with twinkle lights. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as lights for tree that don't run off electricity? I have a very small itty bitty string of LEDs for an indoor fig tree that contains a small power pack attached to it (no need to plug in), but for the life of me i can't find anything like that on a grander scale for my trees outside. Anyone with any info, i thank you in advance!!!

so my porch light right now is a CFL, its enclosed in one of those glass globe things, but it attracts a lot of bugs at night.

if i replace it with an LED light (as those yellow bug spotlights will just be too dim to keep the front of my house lighted properly at night) do the LED ones keep bugs away ?

i think like the other person said they may make specific bug CFL Lights that are bright enough to light the front of your house.

if you can find a person at the lowes who actually knows what they are talking about maybe you can get some help on that end. I have the same prob at my house lots of bugs around the bright white light and am looking into getting something else too.

I bought some indoor/outdoor LED Christmas lights and had them wrapped around a Spruce tree outdoors, and after two years of use I get half of those lights that are dark, the other half are still lit. I checked all the plugs and they are plugged in okay. Is there some way of changing them? I think mine are sealed but I'm not sure.
So if they are only good as garbage after a few years, what good does that do to the environment, aside from energy conservation?

i believe that the bulbs are sealed and not changeable
