DIY Outdoor Lighting Installation?

I want to put decorative lighting on the front of my house. The sidewalk from my entrance leads out to the street and decorative lamps are on the house on each side of this walk...pretty std stuff. Should I tap into wiring going to these lights....or should I create a whole new source? I hate to have to route wire under my sidewalk if I don't have to. I will probably put 3-4 lights on each side of the front part of the house. Thanks

Been there done that. Low voltage lighting is a snap to install, versatile and economical and an awesome nighttime effect. It will give you great satisfaction for the investment but requires burying the main cable to look decent in the daytime. THEN.. after awhile the whole system starts going to crap and it becomes more trouble than it's worth. A 110 volt set-up is more reliable, still requires digging, and SHOULD be installed professionally and is potentially dangerous. They are practically giving away self-contained solar powered lights that you just push in the ground wherever you want, cost nothing to operate, and can be replaced as easily, (and almost as cheaply) as a light bulb. Which one do you think I'd recommend?

Installing Outdoor Landscape Lighting

Check out these easy tips on how you can install outdoor landscape lighting!

Installation of outdoor wall lantern on vinyl siding?

I'm looking to update my outdoor rear entry light. It's currently installed on vinyl siding, however there is no base plate installed and it's wobbly and doesn't "sit" right. I know they make wooden plates solely for this purpose. Question: What is this plate called, and what is the best way to install it? I'm pretty handy, but want a professional looking job.

When they installed the vinyl siding, chances are it was done over an existing siding of some sort. What they did was cover up the electrical box the wires come out of, and to which the light fixture attaches. They did not re-install it correctly when they finished with the vinyl siding.

You do need to remove that siding in that area...or...

Remove the light fixture (after first turning off the switch). with the wires exposed, (coming out of a hole in the vinyl siding), cut around the wires, slowly enlarging the hole until you see the original electrical box. It will be around 3 1/2 inches or 4 inches, either round or square in shape. Cut the siding away no more than an eighth-inch around the box. Then, depending on the thickness of the siding, you can purchase an extension ring that screws onto the existing box, and onto which your new light fixture can be mounted. That way, its both secure and safe.

Low voltage lighting transformer location?

I asked this question a week or so ago and think I may have confused folks. All of these power packs state for outdoor installation only. I called Malibu technical service and all she told me was that it was the UL code.

More simply put, does anyone know of a concern if I mount and plug in my transformer in my basement, and run the low voltage wiring through a small hole to the outside for my outdoor ground lighting?

Hope that's clearer, thanks for any thoughts!

I have mine mounted in a garage. I've had several mounted outside and the connections corrode away after a couple of years, so I got a little smarter this time.

They do get a little hot, so just make sure you don't have a leaky propane bottle or open container of gasoline or your meth lab right next to it.

    Installing An Irrigation Controller

If you are not convinced of the need for an automatic irrigation timer, then you either don’t have a landscape or have never had anyone walk you through the reasons to go automatic. Of course, it may be you hand water things as therapy. You will still be ahead of the game if you automate your irrigation watering. Here’s a few reasons why. 4. Save your precious time. Even if hand watering is something that you do as therapy, you can still opt to override your timer and do things by hand if you want to. However, you won’t have that option if you don’t have one installed. You are either a slave to your hose, or, you have to go around turning valves on and off for your system manually. This is a huge waste of time.

By now you should have realized that this installation on the installation of irrigation timers is for you. In fact, you may already have a timer and just need to change it out because it got old, or stopped working. Regardless, you are about walk through installing a timer with me step by step.

    Green Living Tips | Home Owner#39;s Associations | HOAs | Beverly ...

As energy costs rise and resources become scarcer, more homeowner associations are finding ways to reduce energy consumption and “go green.” With state legislation placing limits on the authority of HOAs to prohibit or regulate certain energy generation devices and energy efficient measures, the issue has come to the forefront of the attention of both HOAs and owners. Given all of this, what are some ways homeowner associations can be proactive in creating or encouraging green practices?

Recycling. If your HOA has centralized trash collection, contract with your trash removal contractor to also provide for recycling. If your community has curbside pickup, recycling may be included in the cost of that pickup. Encourage all residents to recycle.

Reduce Water Consumption. Many HOAs have overly ample open space, much of which may be landscaped with lush grass. While grass is attractive, there are many turf and xeriscaping alternatives that require less, if any, water. Consider replacing high-water consuming plants with plants that require less water. Allow owners to install xeriscaping, subject to any approval requirements for any landscaping project.
