How do I adjust the timing of outdoor motion sensor lighting?

I have two Hampton Bay Carriage Lamp Style fixtures, but I have lost the paperwork, and can find no website or source. How do I adjust the timing? They stay on much too long, and go on if a cat walks by. Help! And Thanks.

There should be two dials on the light near the bottom of the fixture. One is sensitivity (turn down to stop the cat turning the light on) and the other is how long the light stays on.

Outdoor motion sensor light not working?

Disclaimer: I know nothing about electric stuff. The light came with the house! Our outdoor motion sensor light stopped working suddenly. Changing the bulb didn't help. I have the directions for it and went though the test settings, still didn't work. Short of calling an electrician, what can I do to fix it myself? I'm open to converting it back to a regular light if that's easier to fix.

If you have the directions it should show you a way to redo it so it will just be a light and no motion sensor. Not all systems have this option though.

I can tell you those things are not all made equal. I've had to replace some at my parent house several times within a year. My dad finally put up the dough and bought some expensive ones, been up 3 years now with no problems, aside from normal bulb changes.

They're not at all difficult to replace, but if you don't feel comfortable call a friend or worst case, call an electrician. Should be a snap to get it done for them.

My outdoor motion sensor light will dim instead of shutting off. Why?

The light is controlled by a three way switch. When the switch is turned on, the light will come on and when it times out, it only dims instead of completely shutting off. I can still use eaither of the three way switches to completely cut off power which will turn the light off. This light is new and was purchased to replace an older one that had done the same thing. I don't get it!

This is a feature of some lights. They maintain a low-energy glow at night until activated by motion. I assume they do shut off in the daytime. Personally, I like the feature because it provides a little light outside my house, yet consumes very little power.

Most have a setting to allow you to shut off this feature. Check your owner's manual (or Google the brand for a manual).

My outdoor motion sensor light recently came on and will not turn off.?

The light will only turn off when I switch off the breaker box. I inherited these lights when I bought my house, so I don't have any instruction manuals. Any suggestions for how I can get the lights to turn off? I have tried adjusting the sensor distance and timer, and that doesn't help. There doesn't seem to be a reset button on the fixture. The light worked perfectly for the 2 years I have lived in the house, until a week ago...

Turn the breaker off for about ten seconds, then back on. They will usually then come on for a few minutes, then turn back off. This should get it out of manual mode.

My outdoor motion sensor light stop working. I've replaced the bulbs and they still won't work..Any ideas?

I figured that it might be the sensor it self. Are they replaceable? The light does work by a swith however it's always on as this light is used at my back door. So when someone comes to the back door the light is SUPPOSED to come on.
Well I'v just recently bought this house so no instructions.. However it is interesting that you said moisture...I recently had the house pressure washed and a few days later it stopped working... So you thing that the sensor might be damage? So I can go to Lowes and purchase a new one just as long as it's the same brand? Or should I try to reset it first?

You mentioned that is works? Do you have little switches or knobs under the light? If there are, they control how long it stays on, and how sensitive the detector is. Check first that it’s not set to always be on. Maybe the other people preferred it that way, and simply operated it with the switch. Next, I would try to "reset" it. Now if it has completely stopped working since the power washing, this might be hard to do. But you need to find the circuit breaker that powers the light. If you can’t figure out which one it is, and you have the option…kill all power. Now would be a good time to take the front cover off the light and look behind it. Also have on had a circuit tester. You can buy one cheap, and it has instructions. Test to make sure there is no power to the wires, and then take apart each connection. Most likely they are connected with little plastic ‘wire nuts’. Some of them have metal inside that might have corroded. Clean up the wires, and if the original connector is clean, re-use it. If it is not, put on a new one. It’s not really that hard, but may take some time. Now turn the power back on and see what happens. Good luck. You can email me if you need more help. But a new motion light would only be about $20 for a decent one. You would have to find out how to get the power off either way. You should have any problems putting in a new one yourself. I can walk you through that if ya need it.

  • Motion Sensor Outdoor Lighting

Can greatly enhance both safety and comfort to a home.

The motion of someone walking up to the door automatically turns this bright security light ON for 30 seconds to 10 or so minutes according to the choice of its owner. Normally, motion sensor outdoor lights have a 180 degree, 30 foot range and two brightness levels. The lights activate only when movement is detected from up to eight feet away and turn off automatically after an adjustable delay period. The battery operated motion sensor light which uses bright white LED (light emitting diode) light can stay on for just about 30 seconds to conserve the battery.

These lights could be used anywhere for night time illumination, be it deck steps, fence gate or indoor stairwells. These sensor lights are weather proof with plastic housing. They usually run off batteries which last about a year.

    Motion sensor outdoor lights features

The lights are battery operated and there is no wiring or cords most of the time. The light is brighter than the traditional LED ones. The lights also have two brightness levels and motion-activated dual lights come on when movement is detected. The head swivel is adjustable on a 180 degrees angle. Motion sensor outdoor lights can detect motion up to 30 feet away. There are dusk/dawn modes, when lights come on at night and turn off during the day.
