Somewhere on the post there will be a dusk to dawn type of sensor, maybe a small button like thing, could be in the post of in the light fixture. It senses daylight and goes off, senses when light goes away and it comes on, like a street light. The flickering could be either a bulb or a loose wire somewhere in the post, or in the connection junction box.

Contact the manufacturer (or mfr.'s rep.) and ask for the photometrics. (You will need to know bulb type and mounting height.)

Or, you can measure with a light meter (if already installed)

I want to use a standard outdoor post light but change the socket and wires so that I can connect it to my low voltage circuit and use a 10-25 w low voltage bulb. BTW, I'm replacing a fixture that is too old and decrepit to fix. It used a double pin bayonet type bulb.

I am pretty sure that you can buy the "head" for a post mount light that is used with low voltage. Check that out and if you want to keep your same head, you just use the innards from the new head.

Your existing wires might work, but I would rather use new wire. You don't have to trench it down, it only needs to be covered. You can always go along the sidewalk edge to the transformer.

light bulb isle at Home Depot or Lowes carries them....should be called flickering bulb. has a filament that twitches back and forth.
