How do i attach outdoor xmas lights to my porch light?
Clean zero edge detail

basically my dad somehow attached our outdoor xmas lights to our porch light...he's passed away since, can anyone give me any help? thanks

You used to be able to buy little plugs which went into the light socket - then the "nanny state" decided they were far to useful and in the wrong hands, possibly slightly dangerous - so they were banned. your dad probably had one of these little things before nanny get in power.

Other than unscrewing the fitting and wiring into there directly (only if you REALLY know what you are doing) then just run a wire from inside out the window / letterbox etc.

I have modified a few bulb-bases myself and terminated them in connector blocks but again, I cannot suggest you do the same.

How do I repair the switch to the ceiling fan in the livingroom and outdoor porch light?
Zero edge Pool

Both stopped working at the same time, they share a switch box.
We checked the circuit breakers, reset all of them, still no luck, everything else appears to be working fine.
Last Monday we had a fan/light installed in a different room, we also had a remote control added to it. Now that light turns itself on as does the fan although at different times. I assumed they were on a different circuit than the living room / porch light since they are in different rooms but now I wonder....Halloween is over this stuff shouldn't be happening!

Since it isn't the circuit breaker you might have an open connection in the utility box that houses the switch. It could also be a GFCI that is tripped somewhere close by. So first check all the GFCI outlets inside and outside the house, then you will have to check the switch wiring to see if a wire nut has come off or the wire has come loose on the switches. If you find someone has wired the switches with a push in connection, remove the connection and use the screws on the side of the switches instead.

Years ago my neighbour had outdoor Christmas lights with an adaptor that plugged into the bayonet fitting on his porch light.

Basically, instead of training cable from outdoors to indoors, he removed the bulb on his porch light and plugged in the lights.

The lights were string variety...

Does anyone know of this adaptor or plug that I can attach to outdoor lights?

Oh and before anyone says.."Ask the neighbour...he moved!
Thanks to those who answered. But anything like that in the UK?

The item you are looking for WAS called a BC (bayonet cap) adaptor. But these were banned many years ago as they were considered unsafe. Best to get an external socket fitted with an RCD for protection.

How can I put outdoor lights powered by a wall switch on a timer?
Jacobson - Pool overview

I want to put the exterior lights of my home (i.e. porch lights) on a timer. They are powered by wall switches inside my home. Ideally, I would like for the lights to come on at dusk and turn off at dawn. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this?

a photo cell will only turn the lights on when it gets dark and turn them on when it gets light.
if that is what you want it would be more ideal than a timer, you'll need to install an outdoor type box and they sell a photo eye that is on a box cover as well. (and you need to puit the eye in a place that won't be affected by any light (street light or exterior lights around the house)
run a set of wires (2 for hot (black or red), 1 for ground (green), and 1 for a grounded conductor{white wire}) either to the box with the switch or to the breaker panel, whichever is easier
you need to break the line and wire them to each of the photo eye hot leads
wire in your white wire to the other white wire and the green wire to the other green wire

  • Vegas couple add film to porch hummingbird study | San Francisco ...

&Mdash; Don Carroll jokes that when he moved to Las Vegas seven years ago with his wife, Noriko, that he didn't know a hummingbird from a pigeon.

He was a freelance photographer from New York City, not an ornithologist. He only knew a pigeon was bigger than a hummingbird.

But he swears something psychic about the tiny birds lured them to the Las Vegas area's east side.

"I think the hummingbirds called us," Don Carroll said from the couple's back porch.

The porch and its surroundings were center stage for the several years spent documenting in film and spectacular close-up photos the nesting of a black-chinned hummingbird they named Honey.

Honey's nest of sticky spider webs and downy plant fibers sat balanced on a clothesline recently. It stretched beneath the porch's ceiling. It was there the day they arrived from New York on April 17, 2002.

"We virtually got off the plane, drove up here and walked to the back porch. There was a cardboard sign on the floor with an arrow pointing up that read, 'Be Careful! Hummingbird's Nest Above!' That was the first hummingbird's nest we'd seen."

    Outdoor Porch

DEAR TIM: I saw what’s being called an outdoor porch at a model home. It looked to me like a room without walls and was for the most part open to the elements. I’m puzzled by this concept as it doesn’t seem practical to have so many possessions sitting outdoors unprotected. Can you install outdoor porch swings in a room like this? I’m also stuck on what might be the best outdoor porch lights to illuminate these spaces once it’s dark. Gwen P., Wrightwood, CA

DEAR GWEN: You’re not the only one to be perplexed by this newer outdoor-porch trend. I have a traditional wrap-around outdoor porch on my home that provides shade and shelter during rain showers, but it’s not like the porches I ‘m seeing on new homes. While I don’t have an outdoor porch swing at my home now, it would take less than an hour to install the hangers for one.

I agree with you about practicality with respect to these odd rooms. The outdoor porches I’ve seen in magazines, articles and at home shows would never survive the weather and interlopers I know to exist in many areas I’m familiar with. Driving rains, dust, birds, animals and thieves would ruin or rip off many of the things found in these spaces when you’re not around to watch or protect them. Large roof overhangs might protect the contents from most rainstorms, but blowing dust or snow surely could get to many of the furnishings I’ve seen in many of these rooms.
