We live close to a major road that gets quite a bit of foot traffic. Now we keep our property dark at night and have a motion detecting flood light. We've been told that the exterior should be illuminated. My concern is that if the house is lit up at night...things like patio furnature, bikes and skate boards will be visible...and therefore more of a target.
Thanks in advance for your help...Rob
Most thieves do not like to be in the "spotlight". If one is going to rob you, they will do it no matter what you have. You may want to light the yard area with an all night light and use the motion detector type nearer the house. This would deter someone from walking across the property to see what you have to offer.
Lighted passageways and walkways simply leads to a more secure home.
I recently moved into a house that has no outside light in the back of the house. It is VERY dark to pull into the driveway at night. There is an outlet on the outside of the house. Does anyone know where I could buy sometype of motion detector light that I can just plug into the outlet? I can't afford to have an electrician come and run wiring to install a regular lighting fixture...
Roadrunner-You're awesome! I KNEW something like this had to exist! Thanks, I just ordered one!
I just did a quick web search for you and found a motion detector light that plugs in...

You might be able to get something similar at a local hardware store. Just print out the image and bring it in to them.

I recently purchased an Outdoor Security Light with motion sensor.
I attached the wiring to the internal fixture of the light as per the diagram in the instructions. I ran the wiring through some Conduit, through the wall directly into the back of a twin light switch. After wiring it up to the the double switch (one for internal light, second switch for security light) it just didn't operate.
I then proceeded to have the outdoor light operate from the same switch as the internal light, but still nothing. I checked & double checked the wiring & all seems well. Is it possible I just have a bad bulb.
I put the external light sensor on TEST, so the motion sensor isn't the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
It is possible that the bulg is burned. I would check voltages at every point: supply, switch, the light fixture to make sure the path is in tact.

My dad was trying to replace an outdoor security light which is on our shed.
The power cable comes in at the inside of the shed floor, then goes up the wall into a box with two fuses which have switches on.
One cable comes out of the fuse box to a double plug socket and the other comes out of the top to the security light outdoors.
Before he started to change the light he turned the power to the light off by the switch on the fusebox.
When he was changing the light, the houses main electricity tripped and everything went off.
There was no power coming through the wires as he tested the exposed ends with an indicating screwdriver.
Just to be doubly sure he took the fuse with the switch on out of the box but it tripped again.
How could it trip the main box if there is no power coming through?
I'm sorry if my description or electrical terminology is a bit off.
Any ideas please? Any sparks out there?
Thanks.
By removing the fuse from the light cct you have disconnected only the 'live'. He undoubtedly made a contact between neutral and 'earth' in doing the changeover.
If your main (house) switch has an RCD built-in, then that would have tripped it..
it's one of those security lights that when they sense some one they light up. i lost the instructions, it comes with little buttons that you turn one says, sensibility, the next one says dusk/dawn, accent, and security. and the other one says time and test . even if you don't know this brand can you at least tell me how you programed yours. thanks. :]
When you switch to test your light will turn on only if the light unit is in the dark.
Sensitive setting is the range the sensor will respond by turning on light
There should also be a switch to set 5 10 30 number of minutes you want your unit to turn on for
Keep in mind this lighting unit does not work unless it is dark enough to consider it to be dusk
Dusk means will turn off when it is light enough to consider it to be dusk

Outdoor Security Lighting
Peace of mind is truly a blessing. Keeping ourselves and our families safe and out of the way of danger is important to everyone. Adequate outdoor security lighting can provide us with that all-important sense of peace and safety. Whether coming home late from work, socializing or providing for children’s recreation, security lighting will help residents and customers feel at ease
Security lights are the best way to protect your home from any criminal activities. A well lit home could be the last target for any thief or criminal. Criminals most likely look for areas with little to no lighting. A security lighting system is a deterrent because it exposes the criminal, making them feel vulnerable and insecure.
Outdoor security lighting automatically turns on when movement is detected. It is great when you have guests arriving, or simply to welcome you home. These lights don’t need to be switched. They don’t even need complicated timers. Whenever they detect the slightest movement, they will turn on by themselves.
...Protect Your Home From Criminals- Use Outdoor Security Lights
Outdoor security lighting is very essential for safety and security purpose of your home. It keeps many troubles away from your home and thus protects you and your loved ones.
Security lights are one of the most practical and effective ways to prevent crime in or around your home or office. Though, its does not give a 100% guarantee, but crimes are less likely to occur because lighting is an excellent deterrent. If someone is intending to commit a crime, light is the last thing they want.
These lighting fixtures do not need any switches to turn them on and off. They are automatically turned on when they detect some movement in the area where they are placed. These lights always give a welcome feeling while arriving at home.
Installing these lights at right position is very essential. They should be at such a height that no one is able to reach them. If any thief or criminal is able to disable it before entering you house, then whats the use? The best direction to place them is the downward direction.
