I'm looking to update my outdoor rear entry light. It's currently installed on vinyl siding, however there is no base plate installed and it's wobbly and doesn't "sit" right. I know they make wooden plates solely for this purpose. Question: What is this plate called, and what is the best way to install it? I'm pretty handy, but want a professional looking job.
When they installed the vinyl siding, chances are it was done over an existing siding of some sort. What they did was cover up the electrical box the wires come out of, and to which the light fixture attaches. They did not re-install it correctly when they finished with the vinyl siding.
You do need to remove that siding in that area...or...
Remove the light fixture (after first turning off the switch). with the wires exposed, (coming out of a hole in the vinyl siding), cut around the wires, slowly enlarging the hole until you see the original electrical box. It will be around 3 1/2 inches or 4 inches, either round or square in shape. Cut the siding away no more than an eighth-inch around the box. Then, depending on the thickness of the siding, you can purchase an extension ring that screws onto the existing box, and onto which your new light fixture can be mounted. That way, its both secure and safe.

This may seem silly to the professionals but I was wondering about the light timer. This is my first year using one and I'm not sure. My outdoor outlet has two outlets side by side: do I plug the timer into one and the light strand into the other?
haha, never notced the outlet ON the timer!!
plug the timer into the socket, and then plug the lights into the timer & presto. Just remember to set the timer for the correct time :)

Please tell what I need to know about changing an outdoor light fixture (like one by your front door that is attached to your house). This fixture is old and needs to be replaced badly. Do I need to know about electrical in order to change it? Should I hire a professional?
Additional info: Our house is about 50 years old and I'm guessing it is probably original to the house. Coming out of the fixture and extending all the way down the side of the house up against the door frame is metal (matching the old fixture) that I am assuming is covering the wires. Does this need to be changed too?
I want information from people who have actually done this and know what they are doing. I have already picked out what I want, but I have no idea what I am doing. Please give me all of the information you can. Thank you very much!
This isn't too hard to do.
The first thing you must do is turn power off to the light fixture. To do this, have someone near teh breaker box or fuse box, and have the light on. Have them pull fuses out, or turn breakers off one by one, and yell at them when the light goes off.
Just turning a switch off, there can be some current inside and this way all juice is dead.
The next thing you will need is probably a step ladder, a pair f wire strippers, some anti oxidiating gel, needle nose pliars, and a screw driver. You may want to invest into some silicone / caulk too. Also, wire nuts, which are usually provided with teh light fixture and some electrical tape woudl be helpful.
This anti oxidating gel is very important, especially if you are connecting wires together of different metals. Biggest one, aluminum to copper. If you do not do this, over time, one of the metals will corrode and there will be no solid connection.
Ok, as the power is now off to this fixture, you should see where to take the screws off, to get the light fixture off.
Depending if you have ground wire or not, there will be 2 or 3 wires coming from the existing fixture, and inside the new fixture again will be 2 or 3 wires.
If there is a green wire, or a wire that is bare with no insillation, this is the ground wire. Tie these together, and you can wrap them around a screw that is on a metal bar, that goes across the diameter of the hole. If there is no ground wire, skip this step.
The next two wires are the most important. All white white wires, should be connected together. This is the neutral connection. All black wires should connect, this is your hot wire. Wire nut them, and put some electrical tape around it to keep any moisture from getting side.
Once you are done fasten the light fixutre back to the wall, and seal the edges with caulk or silicone.
Then put in a light bulb. Turn on breakers or fuses and you should be good to go.

** When you first took the light fixture off the wall, keep the bunches of wires, together, other than the ones from the old fixture, and keep those seperate from the other bunch of wires that are together. This way, you will not have to sort them later, and put them back together. **
Okay, so I need an answer ASAP! I'm a professional cameraman from the LA area and I've recently been under contract work from an adult film company. Up until now my arsenal of recording equipment has suited all of the company's desires outstandingly, but now they want me to work on something I've never dealt with before. They sent me an address and told me to prepare for outdoor lighting, but when I arrived to the set I was shocked to see a young lady having intercourse with a horse! After the initial shock, I remembered how much the job paid and began to set up my equipment, but I soon realized that I didn't have a wide enough lens to accommodate the horse's "endowment", so we had to reschedule, hence why I need an answer so soon. In addition to my original question, I'd like to add that it'd be best if the camera was not HD like my other cameras, because otherwise the clients and my bosses would be able to count every wrinkle on the animal. My price range is up to $5,000. And yes, I swear this a real question. I'd normally just ask my industry buddies, but none of them have ever needed a camera that meets the sheer expectations of width, quality and affordability that I need. Any suggestions are welcome, because I'm frankly stumped. I don't mean to beat a dead horse, so to speak, but I really do need answers as quick as possible!
