I put those solar light outside until it get dark then I put them in my houe.

I was thinking on solar lighting. I have a 8xAA rechargeable battery from a toy car and I'm going to buy a solar panel, what kind do I need?
Do I need something else? What is a "solar panel controller"?
How I connect everything? What kind of bulbs are better?

PS. I WANT to build it, I know there are very cheap ones out there, but the objective is to learn a bit of electricity (positives and negatives and all that).

You need a panel, 5W is maybe fine, possibly 10W. 12V nominal.

You need a charge controller to prevent the batteries from overcharging.

You should use LED lighting.

I would prefer a Sealed Lead Acid cell.

It won't be very cheap.

I would like to place them under my carport which is covered by a lattice screen. Will they get enough indirect sunlight there to make them work properly?

They will not charge fully and therefore will not be as bright or last as long as normal.

By the time you find them and realize the extra expense you can find some Low voltage ones that will give a better quality of light in both quantity (more light out-put) and quality (better color). Halogen bulbs produce the best kind of light, It's a whiter light than xenon or incandescent. Many of the landscape light fixtures (low Voltage) use halogen bulbs. Find a price range and take the time to do it right or spend your money on the cheap solar and after they break then buy the better kind. The most common thing I see is people will buy a low voltage system after they realize the solar ones don't work, it's a waist of money in my eyes.

Does anyone have any opinion (positive/negative) about the use of outdoor solar lighting in the Southern U.S.? I would place them in an area where they would receive direct sun most of the day - it is also quite warm here most of the year. Is there a particular brand that anyone has had decent luck with?

I have one. Wouldn't buy another. They don't last all night, and are only bright enough to line a driveway. You sometimes have to do a close inspection to see if they're really on. Waste of money.
